Hey. It’s been a while since I’ve stopped to chat because - life! Something always comes up, occurs and steers me off track. However I’ve now come to accept this remains the season of disruption and disorientation. Instead of waiting for calm, press on amidst the chaos. Tbh I just haven't had energy for anything other than liking all of the memes. A lot of us had held on to hope (or convinced ourselves as a way of staying in the possession of sanity) that the world might be a lot more normal by now - and yeah, it’s definitely not. Even though I'm currently not in lockdown, no mat ..read more

Westerns are integral to the understanding of America and its own view of itself. These are tales of freedom, the righteous self-determination of man, masculinity and community. The cowboy is instantly retrievable in our mind: a gun-toting, horse-riding, swaggering hero, who is usually white. This narrow image erases people of colour from a cornerstone of American identity, simplifying and erasing the realities of the collective past. Just as we all know Jesus wasn’t white, the hue of the cowboy has been whitewashed via the Hollywood film genre. In fact, historians estimate that one in ..read more

Before the term intersectionality came to shape how we talk about Black feminism, bell hooks did vital work both on and off the page to articulate the meaning of Black womanhood in the 1980s and 1990s. Simply put, bell hooks, who died on 15 December 2021 aged 69, was the prerequisite for feminist study. She refuted the way white women have excluded women of colour from feminism. bell hooks gave us the vocabulary of “white suprem ..read more

Moving to Qatar and entering a different culture/community can be quite a big change. As a black woman in particular you definitely get used to specific pre- planning to accommodate your needs wherever you’re travelling to in the world and even more so when moving to countries in which we are the vast minority. When I moved to here I didn’t know a single soul and had to FBI style scour the internet looking for things like community, hair salons that treat afro hair and where to satisfy my soul food cravings! Side note: Immersing yourself in the culture of the county that ..read more

Possessing the privilege of being able to cross borders freely – without having to navigate the tedious processes endured by one who holds a less powerful passport – is a reality that is so often taken for granted. When the parameters of major opportunities in your life rely on the colour of one tiny, elaborately sealed booklet, this can hugely impact crucial life choices and decisions.  When you have the ability to jet off without a care in the world for education, to seize job opportunities across borders or just to escape the perils of monotonous routines, you have one of life’s ..read more

After spending most of the year in quarantine and thinking about starting a blog - I’ve finally started a blog!! (10,000 years later than the rest of the world - I know and no one has the patience to read long chunks of peoples’ rambling’s anymore I know, but look I finally made it here! As I write this I’m trying to figure out why it’s taken me so long. I mean, its just a blog, just something fun to look back on and cringe at when I’m old and saggy. Yet I’ve been dragging it out like a commitment - phobe afraid to go public with a relationship. I guess if I psychoanalyze myself, dee ..read more

Click HERE to read original article on the Galia Lahav Webstie. I’ve been a fan of Galia Lahav since way before I became a bride to be. The intricately designed wedding dresses are insane. In the midst of the global protests in support of the #Blacklivesmatter movement we’ve seen many brands speak out against racism around the globe. One by one, we’ve seen promises of reflection, learning and change. When I saw Galia Lahav’s response to the matter, I must admit I questioned their legitimacy. Reason being this brand seldom features black or brown brides/grooms in their campaigns. The ..read more
