USTA Southern California has named Mark McCampbell of Ventura County as the February 2023 Tournament Director of the Month. If you have played tennis in Ventura County in the last 25 years you know Mark McCampbell. He grew up playing tennis throughout the local area with a very active tennis family. Mark learned at an early age how to run tennis tournaments. His father, Bob McCampbell, ran local tournaments and had a pro shop, while his brother John is still a popular tennis coach at the Malibu Racquet Club. February 1 is National Signing Day, a monumental day for juniors across Southern California and the nation. It’s a milestone that three local players will remember for a long time to come. Last month, Fallbrook’s Emily Deming and Alyssa Ahn of San Diego won their first career ITF title at the Barnes Tennis Center Junior Open in the G18 Doubles category. Also lifting his maiden ITF title, local standout Trevor Svajda won the ITF J5 tournament at Barnes over the same weekend, marking a trophy studded week for #TeamSoCal. Each year, the USTA Foundation sponsors an essay contest for youngsters ages 10-18 involved in NJTL programming nationwide. In 2022, entrants were asked to describe how tennis best reflects confidence, character, sportsmanship, and teamwork. For her winning essay among 10-year-olds, SoCal’s Jayara White and her father were awarded a trip to New York City as VIP guests and received a special award at a luncheon held in their honor. There was lots of hardware handed out over the weekend as both adult and junior competition culminated the 2022 Signature Series schedule. In Orange County, a host of adults earned sectional titles while juniors vied for the top spot in the annual Final 8 Junior Masters in Rancho Mirage.
