Trade Name questions

BC will not allow me to register a business name I like, not because it is taken but because of the restrictive rules they have. They are very strict on the ordering of words in a business name, a particular unique first part and then a description of what you do, for example: JAPTYZ Tire installs. When I lived in Alberta it was much much easier. I was thinking of getting around this limitation by Trademarking a name. From what I read in Bc the trademark when advertising has to state somewhere that it is owned by another entity. Has Anyone trademarked a name? Advice? Any suggestions would be ..read more

IT/Consultant/PM CPA recommendation

Other than CPA4IT, does anyone have any experience with an accountant or accounting firm who specializes in incorporated IT Consultants/PMs, preferable in the Toronto area? I have a few questions and I'd like to talk to people with good experience in this area. Recommendations are welcome, but please don't refer me to your uncle's friends' grandfather who works out of his basement. :-) Statistics: Posted by MrBoogaloo — Apr 19th, 2024 10:14 pm ..read more

Growing my Corporation - Contractors - need help in setting up payroll and correct software

Hey, I've had a corporation for 1 year now, and have working for various organizations this past year. Recently I decided to expand and bring on full time contractors (1-3 year contracts) to work with some of the companies I work with, with a small margin on top. To date I've just "paid myself" and my accountant has done her magic to make everything good at tax time, but now I'm needing to become more sophisticated in how I manage payroll, and ensure those that I pay are taken care of. I use Wave apps (free) to do my regular book keeping, but I don't think this is going to cut it for contra ..read more

How do you Import/Reconcile Investment Transactions?

I run a small business and we invest our excess cash in an investment account with BMO InvestorLine. Is there a way to import investment transactions (e.g., buy/sell) into an accounting software? It's hard for me to reconcile my bookkeeping without it. I can link up the investment account bank statement to QuickBooks, but these transactions often do not have enough information. The bank statement line items are just listed as "Balance Adjustment" and do not indicate it as a sale/purchase/etc. This makes it very hard/time-consuming to categorize. I notice that the bank statement also combines ..read more

Hey folk, I'm an IT guy that has been contracting w/Banks as a corporation for the last 4 years (2 years with one and 1.5 years with the other, moving to my 3 shortly). I just found out about this whole PSB thing since the accountant I consulted with when incorporating never told me about it. It has me concerned. My contract have been through major recruiting agencies and there are provisions in there to project me against being classified a PSB, but at the end of the day it seems like it's just a judgment call at the end. I have 3 other clients on the side but they combine for only between ..read more

Hello. I am currently going through a divorce and own a business. My company is a number company and is 'Limited'. I was wondering if anyone here has had any experience with their spouse coming after the business. Would they be entitled and how challenging would it be for me to succeed in keeping it? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks. Statistics: Posted by Roxxxy — Apr 15th, 2024 9:04 am ..read more

Hi there, company with only employee. Doesn’t make sense to pay $40 +$6 for payroll module. How to create monthly paycheck and deductions and enter it manually into Wave? I am sure that few accounts have to be created in chart of accounts first and actual employee as well. Statistics: Posted by JackReacher — Mar 29th, 2024 7:33 am ..read more

From what I've read, there's the 38% part 1 tax, but there are deductions for the federal tax abatement and small business deduction. If I sell something online to someone outside of Canada, do those tax deductions still apply? Statistics: Posted by Captain123 — Mar 25th, 2024 11:04 pm ..read more

With which bank do you run your small business? and what has been your experience with ease of use?

I am with BMO right now, and it is so frustrating to run business with their online banking. they can't export more than 3 months worth of transactions. which is so absurd as business usually need this for tax filing for the past 12 months. they don't provide you with the image of deposited cheques into your account? and you have to order and pay for each one. I just don't understand these odd restrictions that provide no benefit to the bank but cause tons of trouble for customers. Are all the banks' online banking the same? or is this the worst one? what's your suggestion? Statistics: Pos ..read more
