Titus Brandsma, a Dutch Carmelite priest and theologian, killed “in hatred of the faith” in the Dachau concentration camp in 1942 was proclaimed a canonized saint by Pope Francis in 2022. Described as a journalist-martyr of the 20th Century Fr Brandsma, O. Carm., refused to publish Nazi propaganda, was outspoken and was opposed to anti-Jewish laws being promulgated by the Nazis. Fifty-six people have made allegations of historical abuse against twenty-one members of the Carmelite Order. This includes twelve deceased members, six living members and three former members of the Order. All allegations of abuse have been reported to An Garda Síochána and the relevant authorities. Members of the Order who have had sexual abuse allegations made against them and are still alive are subject to a monitoring process within our safeguarding structures. The canonisation of Titus Brandsma took place at St Peter’s, Rome, on Sunday, May 15th. This is a great moment of joy for the Carmelite Order, as St Titus has been an inspirational figure to all who walk the Carmelite path for many years. To mark this great event, the Irish Province of Carmelites will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving at Whitefriar Street Church on Sunday, May 22nd at 4.00 pm. The Most Rev. The Irish Province of Carmelites are organising a pilgrimage to attend the canonisation of Titus Brandsma in Rome from 12th – 17th May, 2022. Members of the Carmelite Family in Ireland, the Netherlands and around the world have greeted with great joy the announcement by Pope Francis that he will declare the Carmelite friar, Titus Brandsma, a saint on Sunday, May 15th at St Peter’s in Rome. Irish Carmelites feel a special closeness to this new saint as he spent time in Ireland during 1935. Titus Brandsma stayed with his Irish brothers at Whitefriar Street, Dublin, and Kinsale, Co.
