My experience after 35 years of travel:
1) Take Yankee-Dollars in small notes 5, 10, 20 (crisp and new series only) and you’ll get cash on a Friday morning in the most conservative bazaar of Afghanistan, Iran or any other godforsaken shithole you might be.
On the other hand
2) Euros will be exchanged equally easily in most parts -- again take 20 and 50s to tide you over say after getting off a Black Sea ferry arriving at 2 am in an obscure port, -8 °C and no bank in sight.
3) my grandma (born 1908) never travelled without 2-3 gold coins in her inside zip belt. (She still had Kaiser Wilhelm II ..read more

Hi, leboglio, don't worry, in all countries you want to visit you can change very easy € and $ in many exchange offices on the way. Don't change so much at the border or in hotels as the exchange rate is very bad + poor.
It's absolute not nessecary to change € in $,

Thanks a lot for your answers.
It seems the best alternative is to go north then: Khujand / Istaravshan vs. Dushanbe. I still think spending a day/night on Iskanderkul is worth it (1.5h from Ayni up and down).
Any other opinions or different suggestions?

Do you know if the same rules apply if you purchase a car in Kyrgyzstan as a non-resident?
I can't say anything about Kyrgyzstan.

From Khujand you can also "visit" Isfara on a day trip with public transport. Not that much to see, but still interesting. On the road you'll notice the huge damages caused by last Tajikistan/ Kirghizstan clash. Maybe you can make it to Vorukh (tajik enclave in Kirghizstan).
