I only collect items from my own farm to build a mental picture of the human activity here over time. My farm is the back corner if an old central Virginia estate, dating back to the 1750’s, but seems to have seen a lot of activity in the mid to late 1800’s through 1915-ish, then it’s pretty quiet except for some enthusiastic deer hunters in the eighties. Subdivided in the nineties, There were no houses within a half mile until the sixties. Our place was built in the late 2000’s. Anyway... Read more ..read more

Wasn’t sure if any forum applied to recently made flint tools. Here’s a pic of my attempts this week. I’ve got a lot to learn and am fortunate to have a mentor. I actually posted this out of humor. I showed the bottom left piece to my wife. It is an early attempt at a spoke shaver. The little guardian is 3” tall for size comparison. Pareidolia is rampant at our house.? She said, “oh neat, you found one that looks like an eagle head profile.” Maybe I should concentrate on effigies instead ..read more

Looking at an email from Live Auctioneers a local auction had a number of fire fighting collectibles, including a number of helmets. When I saw this Cataract Hose #2 it was described as a Goshen NY helmet, but since I have access to old department numbers I looked up Goshen NY and they had a Cataract Hose #1. Then I searched Hose #2 and sure enough Paterson NJ was one of the few that had a Cataract Hose #2. Then I searched their website, which I do research for, and sure enough there were a... I received the attached picture from a member of the U.S. State Department who was stationed in China. I suspect there is some sort of story behind the picture and would like to know what it might be. The symbols might give a hint but not knowing Chinese, I have no idea what they might say. Any information you could provide would be a help ..read more
