On Monday April 3, 2023 at the Seattle Mariners’ home game with Los Angeles Angels, 13-year-old K9 “Keb”, the 2022 American Humane Search and Rescue Hero Dog, caught the ceremonial first pitch of the game! Keb appeared at the home plate (and on the Big Screen), enjoyed some quality time with the Mariner Moose, and was honored during the Mariners’ “Bark at the Park” program. Our exciting evening began at the exclusive “Third Base Entry” at T-Mobile Park, where we were met by representatives of the Seattle Mariners, and led into the VIP lobby. We were then escorted through secret tunnels to ou ..read more

“When my teammate Guy and I started writing our book “A Dog’s Devotion: True Adventures of a K9 Search and Rescue Team” some 5 years ago, we knew absolutely nothing about the publishing process. Getting an agent, a publisher and getting a final manuscript presented it’s own challenges but we got it done. The months and weeks prior to our publication date in October, 2022 were a whirlwind of activity! What we’ve learned since then is that publication was not the end of our efforts – far from it. If you want your book to sell (and we do!) writing your book is only 50% of success – the remaining ..read more

It has been a whirlwind month culminating in a case of Covid which resulted in me quarantining alone with Keb and Kili, my two search dogs, over Thanksgiving. I tend to see the bright side of life and am grateful I have  had a few days to decompress after a very busy couple of months. Admittedly it was disappointing to miss some of our traditional family fun such as our outing into the snow and mountains to cut a Christmas tree. Our adventure memoir, A Dog’s Devotion was released on October 15. And, while making money writing our book never was our goal, we have been off to a good start w ..read more

“Most hikers prepare only for what they expect. Safe hikers prepare for what they don’t expect.” Hubris [hy00-bris] noun: Excessive self-confidence. I am seeing a trend in wilderness travelers toward death by hubris – not hubris in the sense of arrogance, but of over-confidence based on inexperience and fueled by media fads. Early on Sunday, November 20, 2022, 19-year-old Emily Sotelo departed the Old Bridle Path Trailhead for a solo hike in the White Mountain Range. Emily was an avid hiker, but had little experience with hiking in winter conditions. Emily’s planned route was ambitious. As par ..read more
