Chasing Cattle at Dusk

Thursday night, I sat in a feed truck on the side of a highway with my Dad. The vehicle’s emergency flashers pulsed in the fading daylight. We were watching the thick trees along the fence line for cows and calves that might dart toward the road. My dad raises bucking bulls and his cows are not your run-of-the-mill docile, milk cow type of cows.  These girls have high horns and salty attitudes. You better not come between them and their calves.  It takes experienced cowboys to manage this breed of cattle and my dad has always managed them well. Dad has had some heart issues lately ..read more

You Can Choose

Choose joy. Choose light. Choose your attitude. My mom always said, "Bloom where you are planted. Sometimes we don't feel like we are "blooming." Often we are like the dormant ranch flowers. Don't think just because you're not blooming you're not growing! The sunshine makes me long for Spring on the ranch. We are supposed to have 70 degree weather today before another cold, rainy week sets in. We need these rains on our thirsty pastures. We need them to blow in and soak the ground, to give the land what it needs to thrive in Springtime. You and I need the rains too. We need the rains to teach ..read more

Out of the Comfort Zone

I’m at home in a barn… The horses, the dirt, the smells, the sounds… Everything about a barn is in my blood. A barn is comfortable to me. • Over the last 3 years of Callison Ranch Beef & Market, I have found myself in places that were not my comfort zone. Places and opportunities that stretch and prod and challenge. I have learned so much. • I have learned all about processing beef, building a website, shipping and serving our customers. I have spoken to audiences, led workshops, made cooking demos and appeared on Fox & Friends. • I have learned about construction, USDA requirements ..read more

Give Yourself Grace

I took this image of myself before my run yesterday. I thought I would later post something about running or fitness or aging or why I was wearing my hot pink compression socks. But, turns out, my run and this post did not go as planned. I started the morning with intentions of a nice long run on the ranch roads before I opened the Ranch Market. Beat the heat and start the day with a good workout. I paced under blue skies as the cows watched me run the gravel road. Two miles later, a flood of emotions overtook me. Tears bubbled up from my soul. I’ve run while crying before. I have also run wh ..read more

The M5 Entrepreneurs and Rural Revival recently co-hosted a gathering of 75 women from across the United States and Canada in the town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma.  All of the women currently own or are working to open small businesses, many agriculturally related. The picture above is me sandwiched between two of the coolest blondes you will ever meet. My friends and house-mates while at the conference: Amy from Wyoming and Brook from Washington. With hundreds of jumps and Amy’s expert editing skills, we made this fun video! The three-day event featured speakers who discussed website design ..read more

by Kate of Callison Ranch Beef: TC is the newest baby on the ranch! She was given a second chance at life after a traumatic first day in the world. Here is her story. Sometime in the night on March 27th, shortly after she was born this little girl was forced through the barbed wire fence by another Mare. This particular mare tends to lose colts pretty often. We aren’t sure why this happens. After loosing a baby of her own she ran off the mother of this little filly, causing the filly to go through the fence in the process. It’s very sad to see a mother who wants a baby of her own so badly. So ..read more

A Storm is Blowing In...

A storm is blowing in... • The last few days has brought winter to the ranch like never before. Since Roger’s Alaskan bear hunt he keeps the weather for Kodiak Island on his phone’s weather app. This week we have been colder here in southern Oklahoma than in Alaska! • We did all we could to prepare before the cold rolled in; but how do you prepare for record low temps? • Everyday we put out extra hay and feed for the cattle so they have the energy to keep their bodies warm. Everyday we chop ice in the ponds and water tanks so the animals can drink. Everyday we pray that God watches over our a ..read more

Queen Ruby has a new stall mate... “Not Karen” the cat loves keeping her company? My nieces and nephews gave us Not Karen. Apparently they had a litter of kittens. One was always getting into everything and they called her “Karen.” This little litter mate became Not Karen by default ?? We just love her and so does Ruby❤️ She doesn’t put up with any of the dogs’ nonsense, she requires head scratches when we come to the barn and she is a friend to Ruby on these cold winter days. I’d say Not Karen has found her place on Callison Ranch. Sometimes being a good friend just means “being there” for th ..read more

I’m with you (so is Tulsa?) even when you feel all alone, anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, and cold. I’m with you, even when in reality we’re likely hundreds of miles apart. I’m with you when you wake and your eyes are covered with matter and hay pieces from the day before. I’m with you when you bundle up and prepare for what the day out there holds. I’m celebrating with you in that moment that your equipment actually starts, and you were super concerned it wouldn’t. I’m with you when you have to scoop the bunks before you put out the feed, and hungry eyes are staring at you- impatiently wai ..read more
