Our August book club will be the last book club for a while. I’m taking a long break until the end of the year and hope to be back again in January. I picked two novels that are weird and kind of unknown which is what this book club was all about at the start. So I’m hoping for peak Bored to Death book club conversations where half of the book club is thinking wtf did I just read while the other half loves it. Take a look at the picks and vote for the weirdest one! Satantango László Krasznahorkai In the darkening embers of a Communist utopia, life in a desolate Hungarian town has come to a vi ..read more

I’ve Read Exciting Times, Now What?

Our February book club pick was Exciting Times by Naoise Dolan. The novel was about a young Irish woman who moves to Hong Kong and has trouble fitting in and finding her bearings while also entering in a relationship with Julian as well as Edith. Everyone who talks about the book, can’t help but mention Sally Rooney because the vibes are very similar. So if you like Rooney, you might love Dolan as well. However, I’ll recommend some other Irish authors in this post, some you might not know or think about but should give a try! If you have any other recommendations, please leave them in the comm ..read more

Kids do the darnedest things. Let’s read about it! Oldladyvoice Elisa Victoria Nine-year old Marina may swear like a sailor and think like a novelist, but even the most exceptional child can get lost on the road to adulthood. While her mother is in the hospital with a grave but unnamed illness, Marina spends the summer with her grandmother, waiting to hear whether she’ll get to go home or be bundled off, newly orphaned, to a convent school. There are no rules at Grandma’s, but that also means there are no easy ways to fend off the visions of sex and violence that torment and titillate the gi ..read more

I asked on Instagram which hype books you haven’t read yet and got some great responses. Here are two hype books – and hype is just a weird term I used – that you might get to read next month! Beloved Toni Morrison Sethe was born a slave and escaped to Ohio, but eighteen years later she is still not free. She has borne the unthinkable and not gone mad, yet she is still held captive by memories of Sweet Home, the beautiful farm where so many hideous things happened. Meanwhile Sethe’s house has long been troubled by the angry, destructive ghost of her baby, who died nameless and whose tombstone ..read more

The summer is starting which always means busier days and maybe more difficulty to make time to read. So for our July book club I picked three novellas that are easy to read in a day or two. Take a look at and vote on your favorite! To Be Taught, If Fortunate Becky Chambers At the turn of the twenty-second century, scientists make a breakthrough in human spaceflight. Early December we read No One is Talking About This by Patricia Lockwood. We had predicted it as the winner for the Man Booker Prize, which it didn’t, but it did make for an interesting book club discussion. We talked a lot about the internet, the different parts of the book and whether or not the use of actual memes was fun or not. I have more recommendations about internet novels but always love to hear more. If you have any other recommendations, please leave them in the comments! I also have some discussion questions at the end just in case you’re talking about this book with your own book ..read more

For our next book club we invited The Base Bookspace as a guest curator! Lianne picked two awesome books on which we can vote and will join us at our next book club. That one will be in early June, due to me moving and location difficulties. The plan is to meet at Biergarten again, so fingers crossed that the weather will be nice! A short introduction on who The Base Bookspace is and why they are great: The Base Bookspace is an online Rotterdam-based bookstore. The concept originated from the founder’s own heritage and lifelong love for the written word. It is the Base ..read more

Following our Best Books We’ve Read This Year post, I have found plenty of books to add to my TBR, so let’s work on that immediately. I’ve picked two titles of the entire list – believe me it was hard – to kick off the new year. Take a look at and make sure you vote on your favorite! Detransition, Baby Torrey Peters Reese almost had it all: a loving relationship with Amy, an apartment in New York City, a job she didn’t hate. She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then ..read more
