Every once in a while, a book character comes along and changes things. Not just for one reader (although that is also a huge accomplishment), but for society in general. This character moves from the page to everyday culture. This is what has happened with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Phrases like, “The game is afoot,” and “no s***, Sherlock” are ubiquitous. Almost everyone at least knows who Sherlock Holmes is. Now, the question is: why? Sherlock himself is actually a very unlikable character. He’s too smart for his own good, is constantly making everyone else look less-than-co ..read more

I have a new feature on my blog, thanks in large part to my awkward early interviews. I realized that my more recent interviews are still zany, so I’m just going to lean into the whole awkward thing. In this vein, I’ve asked some victims- ahem, bookbloggers- to allow me to ask them some tough questions. Peat Long, whose blog is a favorite of mine, exercised questionable judgment and agreed. WS: “If you were in a metal band, which book character would you want to have growling vocals?” Peat: ” Oh wow, strong start. It feels like the obvious answer is some dragon or werewolf. Or a demon. My husband mentioned that he had read an article about Maurice Sendak’s anger at what he felt were extreme similarities between Jim Henson’s brilliant movie, The Labyrinth, and his own children’s book titled Outside Over There. I enjoy the Sendak books that I’ve read (my favorite is actually Chicken Soup with Rice). Apparently, he even considered legal proceedings but ultimately changed his mind. For his part, Jim Henson acknowledged the inspiration of Maurice Sendak in the credits of his movie. Of course, it’s easy to see Ludo as a Henson-esque homage to the Wild Things, and there are nods t ..read more
