Women did exceptionally well in several events at the Cherry Blossom Backgammon Championship held April 17-21, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, VA. Marcy Kossar (MD) made history by placing second in the American Backgammon Tour (ABT) Cherry Blossom Championship. She was edged out by the #1 U.S. Grandmaster, Victor Ashkenazi (NJ), in a very exciting final match. In another first, Irina Litzenberger (VA) served as Co-Commentator for the streamed match, which can be found on YouTube. Melanie and Jerry had them on the ropes throughout much of the early match, leading by 7-2 in a match to 9 at one point. But they never scored another point. Kent and Karen missed some doubles in the early games, but not in the last game where at a score of 7-5 to 9, they gave an early “no double/take” and were rewarded with a gammon. Both teams had no cube errors – despite the cube soaring to the 8-level in a 9-point match won by the Norwegian team of Dagfinn Snarheim and Marianne Husum.
