Women starred at the 47th Los Angeles Backgammon Open held June 5-9 at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton. Candace Mayeron produced the fabulous event. Kara Schultz, who has been on a skyrocketing journey to the top since winning the 2018 California State Novice event, played in the Championship division and finished tied for 4th in a field of 102 players, including buy-backs! Peer Coaching Program   Last fall, after our article on the chess team from Harlem beating every Ivy League wannabe through their peer-to-peer coaching, we launched a program offering to pair peer-to-peer coaches and students. The best-laid plans! So many people wanted coaches, so few coaches available. And then there were problems with program coordination. Women did exceptionally well in several events at the Cherry Blossom Backgammon Championship held April 17-21, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Dulles, Herndon, VA. Marcy Kossar (MD) made history by placing second in the American Backgammon Tour (ABT) Cherry Blossom Championship. She was edged out by the #1 U.S. Grandmaster, Victor Ashkenazi (NJ), in a very exciting final match. Melanie and Jerry had them on the ropes throughout much of the early match, leading by 7-2 in a match to 9 at one point. But they never scored another point. Kent and Karen missed some doubles in the early games, but not in the last game where at a score of 7-5 to 9, they gave an early “no double/take” and were rewarded with a gammon.
