Thoughts on Warhammer: The Old World
Classic Warhammer 40K

Warhammer Fantasy was always my first love, I’m not even sure how I got so sidetracked with 40K to be honest… The first wargaming figures I bought and painted were lizardmen in the 1990s 5th edition Fantasy era. So, like many, I was pleased to see “The World That Was” back again. I finally had a chance to play a game, and my regular opponent (who already has a few games under his belt) ran me through the rules last night. We played a 1,500 point pitched battle with my High Elves vs his Lizardmen. I lost comprehensively. The game was enjoyable enough and not really that different to most previ ..read more

Eldar vs Space Marines, 2nd ed 40K battle (new rules re combat resolution)
Classic Warhammer 40K

Last night my Alaitoc Warp Hunters took on Jason’s Dark Angels in a bloody battle. I remembered to take a few photos this time and I wrote up a brief report of the battle (but this is not a comprehensive battle report). We also used our own house rules for combat resolution for the first time. The combat resolution rules basically import the rules from 6th/7th edition fantasy to work out combat resolution – to deal with the fact that assaults in 40K are not decisive and bog down units for too many turns. What is the point of assaulting though except to force a decision? Basically you charge a ..read more

Churchill NA75 (and Mark IV) (Warlord Games kit) and musings on 2024
Classic Warhammer 40K

Happy New Year, friends! I painted a Churchill Second World War infantry tank for Tom Egan‘s Festive Tank Challenge over 21 – 31 December 2023. Did it come out perfectly?…No, but it looks good I think and it’s done, which is perfect in its own way! I built it from the Warlord Games kit which went together fine, though the tracks are a bit fiddly. It also includes enough parts to make a 7 different variants, though not enough to make 2 different versions at the same time even though it would mean only adding 5 extra (small) parts to the sprue to enable this (basically an extra stowage box and ..read more

Tiger I 132 (Rubicon models early Production) and musings on 2023.

Happy New Year, friends! I completed this Tiger I in Panzer Grey as part of Tom Egan‘s Festive Tiger Challenge over on Twitter after being encouraged to join by a fellow tweeter. It was a last minute thing and I painted it very quickly but overall I’m pleased with the results. I painted it with Hobby Boss SchwarzGrau (black grey) as the base colour using Tamiya XF-63 German Panzer Grey as the highlight colour. Transfers are a mix of Rubicon and Warlord. I wanted to do a Tiger in Panzer Grey of which about 20 were delivered in this scheme to heavy panzer battalions 502 and 503 which we ..read more

Game of 2nd ed 40k
Classic Warhammer 40K

Covering fire set up on the rooftops of a shattered Imperial city. I played a game at last with my eldar army. It was quite an achievement to play a game with a fully painted army—the first time ever in 20+ years of hobby—after painting the army over the last 2 years. I have put a brief battle report on my Twitter page and the thread is linked here: https://mobile.twitter.com/classic40K/status/1571357194142220289 ..read more

More Alaitoc eldar guardians
Classic Warhammer 40K

A few more eldar. Not too much to say about them. They use the same palette as the previous ones, though for some unknown reason they came out a bit darker. This one is another of the awesome proto avengers, some of my favourite miniatures of all time. I added some more Blanchitsu flames to the bottom of the shuriken…why not? The guardians were fairly straightforward… …though no doubt the eagle eyed have noticed that this one is a dire avenger with a head swap from the old monopose 1990s plastic guardians. I had more dire avengers than I would ever need, and not enough guardians w ..read more

Guardian heavy weapon team with scatter laser on anti-grav platform
Classic Warhammer 40K

The next few miniatures for my Alaitoc Warp Hunters army, and toward my 2nd ed Army Challenge pledge. This time a guardian heavy weapons team armed with a scatter laser on anti-grav platform. I tried to go a fairly classic Alaitoc style, but with a more classic woodland/line type camouflage pattern on the scatter laser base rather than the mottled camouflage used by the Studio Alaitoc army. iphone photo The colours used were GW Enchanted Blue for the base colour (the same as the guardian armour), with the broad stripes done in GW Alaitoc Blue next, then the final smaller intersecting stripes ..read more

3rd 2nd ed Painting Challenge – Month 3 – Red Circus – Warp Spiders and Striking Scorpions
Classic Warhammer 40K

For month 3 of the challenge I painted some red models to achieve the “Red Circus” bonus round – what could be more 1990s than bright red after all? When I first got into the hobby in about 1997 I really fell in love with the classic ‘Eavy Metal Warp Spiders and so it was quite special to finally paint these classic models in the classic scheme. Despite what people say these models have no need to be updated. They are already perfect. I also enjoyed painting Karandras and 2 more aspect warriors to fill out the squad I painted in 2020. To be honest I’m not nearly as happy with the green on th ..read more

Female Eldar Guardian for Fembruary
Classic Warhammer 40K
by Warburton

Is Alex of Leadballoony running a Fembruary Challenge this year? I don’t know, but out of caution I made sure to finish a female model this month. Once again I went with a female eldar, a guardian this time, part of my slowly growing Alaitoc Warp Hunters army. EDIT: The Fembruary Challenge did go ahead, the Fourth Annual, and Alex’s round-up can be found HERE. It is fair to say that 2020 was not a good year for me in terms of the hobby. I did not achieve any of my goals, though I did manage to play a few games of 2nd ed 40K in the second half of the year. At the moment I seem to be back into ..read more

3rd Second Ed Painting Challenge – Month 2 – Wraithguard
Classic Warhammer 40K

For Month 2 of the Challenge I finished 5 classic wraithguard. Not too much to say, I painted them the same way as the guardians. Except I did add a lot of transfers for the iconography. I think they turned out pretty well, overall. Here is a link to the official write up on the c0wabunga! site. Next month, Warp Spiders and Striking Scorpions ..read more
