Accupgase c-200x preamp - high pitched constant stereo tone

So, I’m being treated poorly by our engineering friends in Japan. My accuophase p260 and p102 amps are 100% operational, cables and interconnections, great, source, great. (iPad streaming tunes through tidal direct connect to amp) Once I use my preamp as the go-between, as soon as I engage the amp, (there’s a source on/off button on the preamp) I get a constant high pitched tone, no music, both ears. Same with headphone jack. Is this a ground issue? Something grounding out somewhere... Read more ..read more

Sherwood S-5500 II questions

I've just finished a recap job for a friend's Sherwoood S5500 II with 7868 output tubes. The original complaint was that the unit had plenty of volume, but no sound quality at all. Now that the re-cap job is done my next step is some testing. There is a potentiometer on the top of the chassis, marked Bias. Bias for what? Naturally I would expect to hook up a VTVM and adjust tube bias. Although it's strange that there's just the one pot. The manual mentions nothing about this pot, or any... Read more ..read more

Mcintosh mc2125 one channel intermittent

Greetings. First post. My Mc2125 has no input or intermittent to one channel. I’ve swapped cards left to right and the sound was stereo for about 5 minutes. I knocked the centre transformer with the butt of a screwdriver and it immediately reverted to one channel. Meter not working and headphone jack — same: one side only. Visually, I see no cold solder joints. I’ve sprayed with contact cleaner. I have no meter so I can’t troubleshoot electrical connections. Is this a connector issue, a... Read more ..read more

Advice - Turn this MAGNAVOX ASTRO SONIC into a Guitar Amp * I am still novice and an amateur electronics enthusiast tech at best. Just mechin’ around with a few kiddo circuit bends, a few guitar builds, fx processors, and amplification tube and speaker swapping and installations, at this point. ** Also, need to keep this project as affordable/free as possible. ————— Recently found a vintage (late 60s?) MAGNAVOX Astro Sonic stereo console (more like an XXL Archaic Musical Dresser) the... Read more ..read more

Technics crossover re-cap suggestion

My SB6000a's crossovers need a recapping. I've spent hours trying to make heads or tails on what I should go with. I know film caps would be great, but for the 3 68uf caps I'd have to start fabricating a new mounting board for them etc. Then I get into bipolar vs polarized......then Vishay vs Wurth......50vdc or higher. Electrolytic vs Polymer etc. I hate to say I'm looking for an "easy" answer/solution but, I kinda am and just want these speakers to sound as great as they look ..read more

Replacing 2-layer PCB eyelets / vias / connected through holes?

I'm diagnosing and recapping a Velodyne amp module - and it's giving me this opportunity to learn something. Various of the connected through-holes (what is the right name for these? Vias? Eyelets?) have come apart thanks to, from what I can see, heat (from use and probably also from my solder sucker too). Mainly the destroyed solder channels are under the amplifier's filter capacitors, but a couple smaller ones where the amp board is soldered to its power supply also came apart. Top of... Hoping for help finding single gang pot

I am currently working on a Marantz SR 9000 G. After taking apart the front end I saw that the potentiometer used for the balance control must have taken a hit previously in life. In practice, I remove the potentiometers from the board in order to get good access for cleaning. After removing it, I saw that it had a split in the phenolic material, right at the solder posts. Of course, by removing it, I made it worse. It is a 200 kohm single gang with loudness... Read more ..read more

Missing Binding Post in Vintage Dahlquist

So I recently purchased a pair of Dahlquist DQM-9s for a screamin' deal. They're a bit of a project but I don't mind. I wanted to ask about this missing binding post. I have no hands-on experience with speaker restoration, but I'm doing my research and asking for help to make sure I do this correctly. I called the Regnar/Dahlquist support line and I'm waiting on them to call me back. All I was able to find on the website were cap upgrades, grill cloth replacements, etc. My main question... Hi all, Saw this guy known non-working for a decent price and decided to bite the bullet to see if I'd be able to bring it back to life. Cosmetically the outside is wonderful, other than a few non-functioning lights. There is no sound output. The inside is a different story. Very dusty and many spots where boards look like they were burnt to a crisp. As I've seen is common with this... Read more ..read more

Which Kontakt Chemie products exactly do I need to clean/restore an old receiver?

I have an old Telefunken RR 100 receiver which generally sounds pretty good, but the right channel will occasionally start cutting in and out and/or sound scratchy until I fiddle with the volume knob, which will resolve the issue for a while. From reading around on similar issues, I believe this is due to corrosion and poor contact somewhere, and I should clean & lubricate the potentiometers and switches. I've never done this before, but from this guide it seems like it should be... Read more ..read more
