My 25-year old son has had hypoglycemia symptoms for years and recently got the chance to use a CGM cast off from a friend to see if he was actually having measurably low blood sugars. Over the week, he learned that he was definitely having low blood sugar, set off the urgent low alert (<40mg/dl) twice in fact. And lots of high blood sugars too. The first few days he had a cold and his numbers were quite high, fasting around 150, high 200s/low 300s after meals. Then the cold cleared up, and his BG plummeted. Fasting of 70, and those urgent lows. Then after about a day or so of that, it went ..read more

Having just passed my 50th year living with T1D, I decided to publish a lot of my writings over the years about living with the disease, not really from a lifestyle perspective, but more about understanding the complexities that are often oversimplified. I originally published this piece in 2020, but thought I’d give it mention here: You’ve Got Type 1 Diabetes! Let the Fun and Agony Begin. It tracks the journey through the three stages of self-management, from the beginning, where you don’t know anything, through the third stage, where you realize that no one knows anything. (Kidding, but not ..read more

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 in January 2022. We discovered it early so she was not in DKA. She is 8. The crazy thing is she started getting very nauseas and complained of fullness. We did an X-ray and her stomach was emptying VERY slowly. They prescribed her erythromycin 3 times a day before meals. Her endo says she has not seem a patient that young with gastroperisis. She did test negative for celiacs. Her endo also said she does not think gastroperisis is associated with her type 1 because it would be too early. I am at a loss, how could this happen? It has been a roller coaster tr ..read more

Hey everybody. Soo… I’m just gonna go straight in. Background; I’m 29 years old, with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, mother of two, vegan, quite skinny. Last tuesday I went to a Diabetes Nurse (not sure what it’s called in english), because my Doctor had noticed slightly elevated blood sugars (118.8), and positive GAD-ab. The nurse told me I had LADA, because of the anti-bodies and the connection to my Hashimoto’s. She gave me a Freestyle Libre to check my glucose for 14 days, and I’m going back on June 2nd. My blood glucose is all over the place… One morning I woke up with 52.2, the morning after I ..read more

I am brand new to the diabetes community. I was just diagnosed 2.5 weeks ago. I am a nurse and so as far as the normal things I kinda knew the basics. My question is since starting my Lantus at night I wake up with a horrible headache every morning as well as I will wake up in the middle of the night with my heart racing. Is this something diabetes/insulin related or is just my anxiety since diagnosis? Thank you in advance! 29 posts - 8 participants Read full topic ..read more

I was just diagnosed on June 4, 2019. Typical diagnosis story: I had been feeling very bad, losing weight, couldn’t see, couldn’t stay awake, etc. Took myself to the stand alone ER where they promptly sent me straight to the ICU via ambulance where I stayed for 3 days. My blood sugar was 718, a1C was 13.8. So here I am almost 5 months later and I’ve managed to keep myself alive. I’ve got a Dexcom and do MDI (Tresiba and Humalog). I have been eating low carb (under 40g carbs per day) since I got home from the hospital because I find it easier to manage my blood sugar that way. My best friend is ..read more

Hi, my husband is a newly diagnosed this year t1d. We are starting to feel like we are just now getting the hang of this whole thing. Using the smart features and google calendar have really helped us. We really never had any experience with anything medical before this. So this maybe a silly question. But almost right from the beginning we struggled with getting insulin prescribed. Then when we finally got an appointment with an endo after leaving the hospital it felt better- like okay now we are going to have someone dedicated to his diabetes meds. But I am having the toughest time getting t ..read more

Hey y’all! I’m a mom of a 7 year old struggling to find answers. Her randoms are anywhere from 140-216 her morning fasting averages at 130. We have been diet controlling. We have since seen an endocrinologist for labs and she said possibly very on set early type 1. So far her labs have came back pretty normal Her c peptide was 1.38 fasting (0.90-7.10 normal) immunoglobulin A 44.9 (41-345 normal) her glutamic acid decarboxylase ant ..read more

Do steriods effect everyone’s blood sugar or just diabetic’s? My daughter is on budesonide now for her asthma. I took her fasting this morning and it was 140 . We are monitoring her for early onset T1D, her body still make insulin and her fasting isn’t usually that high… normal or concerning? 6 posts - 6 participants Read full topic ..read more
