Many preppers are looking for a communications plan. The second consern they have is evading detection. Direction finding of low power transmitters would be more difficult with a frequency hopping plan. Changing bands from VHF to UHF would further complicate direction finding. Say you have 10 people and 20 acres of land, your basic China HT will cover that area fine unless you are in the mountains. Just pick your frequencies, program the radios and you are set. I would recommend a good...

The Radioddity 10 meter radio is one of the easiest radios to convert from 10 meters to 11 meters (CB Band). The only tool needed is a philips screwdriver to remove the bottom case. There is no wire cutting nor soldering ..read more

I am surprised that I am not seeing more guys talking about and posting about GMRS. Especially when guys are talking about citizen band radio that has only a 5Watt output. I have outfitted both of my vehicles with 50 Watt GMRS radios and now I can talk to my wife from my work or her work . It is only about 22 miles (hwy not as the crow flies) apart but we are clear as day. I am in Houston and we are flat with lots of structures. Now that I am happy with my comms I am about to invest in...

Just a note. As an HF antenna, I've been using a design I've been using for 25 years, (I've built a couple) . It.s a home-brew fan dipole which cost me about 30.00 to build and I get 9 bands and world wide with it. I have plans with pictures I can e-mail or snail- mail if anyone is interested . I'm good on QRZ.com and my e-mail is : unclelevi49@gmail.com ..read more

Hello folks. I very nearly bought a pair of Cobra walkie talkies at the local farm supply store. The boasted an impressive 16 mile range. I decided not to impulse buy them, and after reading some reviews, it seems like you'd be hard pressed to do a half mile with them. I wouldn't expect 16 miles out of a $40 set of radios--but that seems crazy to me!
Can anyone recommend a halfway decent walkie? Something stripped down and basic is fine. They would be used for backup communication...

What is eveyone's take on CB Radio ? Do you think it would come into play when the shtf ? Would it be useful communication?
A legal CB Radio is only 4 Watts. Range would be limited, 5 miles maybe, but there are some out there that are pumping out more Watts then the Legal Limit. I pick up people all over the country.
So what's your take ..read more

Can anyone give me advice on getting an antenna for a pair of Baefeng radios? I have the UV-5R+ 8/4/1W radios.
I can get up to 3 miles with no problem, but would like to get 10 miles. Is there any external antenna I could get for these that would give me that 10 mile+ distance?
(I recognize we need an amateur license to transmit with them ..read more
