I have an FT-857 and I'm using a digirig. No matter what sofware I run as soon as I start and and the radio is poled it starts transmitting and won't stop until I stop the software. Any ideas as to what's going on, this making me nuts. submitted by /u/Ok_Childhood_4868 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is Ham Radio Deluxe a good fit for me?

Hello all, I am probably a very boring ham radio user who is pretty much only into making SSB contacts. I am also still kinda new as an Extra with less than a year into this hobby of ours. I’m not a fan of cw or digital and am pretty content with just making phone contacts. My question to you all that have experience with the Ham Radio Deluxe software is should I bother getting it? From what I’ve read, I believe you really get the most out of this software if you are into digital modes, but the reasons I have an interest in HRD is for me being able to have “rig control” with my Yaesu 991A, us ..read more

GMRS Repeater use by a HAM

As a licensed ham operator I often volunteer at a youth camp. They often do not have enough handhelds to go around. My radio will tap their repeater and work just fine so (in theory) I could just use my own. However……. The repeater is licensed as a GMRS repeater (well, some more experienced folks say the call sign is a GMRS call sign) The license for the repeater says in the Radio Service block - IG Industrial/Business Pool Convnetional. The Eligibility block says: 90.35a1 - Applicant is a camp and radios will be used for activities safety and property maintenance. So here is my question: I h ..read more

Utilizing ft5dr for security alert

We have had a few thefts at the farm. The alarm does nothing to scare them off. The police don't care even with video evidence. Recently, I purchased a few solar/wireless sensors that alert to a base station. At 433.20 MHz. I would like to have a portable option for alerts. I have a cheap ($30 amazon) radio that crackles a bit when the sensors are set off but I can't get my ft5dr to receive without holding the squelch open (which isn't an option for awaiting an alarm). Long few days of work/head scratching. I read something about changing DCS or yeasu having a "pager" function I might be able ..read more

Bought a ham radio and didn't know what I was doing

I really don't know anything about this, I accidentally said "hello" on some frequency then found out that it's illegal to do? And I'll be fined 20k?? Is that true? I don't mind paying that fine since I made a mistake, but I don't want the cops showing up at my home since it would be awkward and my place is a mess. Are they for sure coming? I really just said hello on a few random frequencies. submitted by /u/Low_Marionberry_3802 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

If I have my technician class license, can I use mobile units with my 9 year old son? I saw somewhere that unlicensed can be on it supervised. Would that apply to my son who would be using it only with me? If someone asks for his call sign can I give mine and say he’s under my supervision? He’s very bright but I doubt he’s going to be able to pass the test without hands on usage holding his interest. submitted by /u/RaptureSuperior2 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I know nothing, but extremely interested. I love all the knobs and buttons and switches. Where would be a good place to get a 101 education? YouTube, books, etc

Hey Guys, I am trying to build a loop antenna for listening to HF using this tutorial: https://swling.com/blog/2020/04/diy-how-to-build-a-noise-cancelling-passive-loop-ncpl-antenna/ I am a bit confused regarding the way the wire is looped around the binocular ferrite. I understand that there are two wires but thats it. Could you give me a hint? thx submitted by /u/GeoGemstones [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Requesting a Vanity Call Sign

Hi everyone, I recently went through the process of requesting a new vanity call sign. I provided a list of about 15-20 desired signs in order of preference. Before submitting, I made sure to check the availability of the top 10, and they were all available. However, when my request was processed, I ended up receiving a call sign that was way down on the list. It was approved, but I'm not really fond of the one that was provided. I verified that all the call signs I requested were within the allowed parameters. Given this outcome, I'm considering whether I should submit a new application but ..read more
