Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and Geological Survey Ireland are encouraging the next wave of ‘citizen seismologists’ through a new programme – Quake Shake – which was launched on 05 December 2023. Seismology is the study of earthquakes and seismic waves that move through and around the Earth. This new outreach programme is calling on people of all ages across Ireland to get involved in observing and studying local and global earthquakes – helping them to develop a better understanding of what lies beneath the Earth’s surface. Quake Shake uses devices known as a Raspberry Shake s ..read more

21 November 7 p.m., Old Physics Theatre, MoLI Museum, 86 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2 ‘Exploring the Deep Earth: Supercomputing and Digital Twins’ with Speaker Prof. Heiner Igel, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich Understanding the history of our planet necessitates a look into Earth’s deep interior. The Earth’s mantle is in permanent motion and drives the continental plates leading to earthquakes, and volcanic activities world wide. Seismology can provide a 3D image or snapshot of the current state of the dynamic Earth’s interior allowing us to understand the underlying physical phenomena ..read more

Things that go bump in the night: bats, dark energy and worlds beyond our own at Samhain agus Science 2023 How can the unique biology of bats help us solve some of the greatest challenges that humans face today? What lurks on the planets beyond our solar system? These questions and more will be explored during this year’s Samhain agus Science festival, by expert researchers including Professor Emma Teeling, Head of Zoology at University College Dublin. Run by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), the full festival line-up was announced today (23.10.23). Now in its sixth year, Samha ..read more

Samhain agus Science, now in its 6th year, is an annual initiative of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies taking place each year during Halloween. From spooky science to the mysteries of the Celtic festival of Samhain, DIAS scholars from the Schools of Celtic Studies, Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics and Geophysics host a programme of public events. This year’s festival runs from 25 October to 06 November with a total of five events (see below), representing all our schools. All events are in-person, with four taking place at DIAS HQ, 10 Burlington Road, Dublin 4, and the fifth taking p ..read more

Irish scientists discover why Ireland has fewer earthquakes than Britain

(08.06.2023) A team of researchers from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) and the University of Cambridge has discovered that variations in the thickness of tectonic plates relate directly to the distribution and risk of earthquakes in Ireland, Britain and around the world. Their research helped in answering the longstanding question of why the seismicity – the measure of the frequency of earthquakes in a region – between Ireland and Britain is surprisingly uneven. The research team employed a technique called ‘seismic tomography’ which uses seismic waves generated by earthquake ..read more

Registration is open for prospective PhD and early stage post docs for IMPROVE Summer School. The school will focus on geophysical data inversion and numerical forward modelling which are key elements in the study of volcanoes. Physics based inversion allows the estimation of a population of models by extracting information from observed data, while forward modelling tools can yield a prediction of the expected data, given a model. Combined use of these approaches permit estimates of volcano source parameters and volcano structure. In the Ireland School we will consider theoretical and practic ..read more

Ground-breaking images of space, unlocking the secrets of 7th century Ireland, and the country’s first underground seismic station The Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) is reflecting on a successful year for the organisation, which included a number of significant discoveries and collaborations for its researchers. DIAS carries out work across four key areas, including Astrophysics, Geophysics, Theoretical Physics and Celtic Studies. During 2022, it has contributed to and led Ireland’s involvement in some of the most significant break-throughs and discoveries in these research field ..read more

(26.07.2022) Earthquakes around the world will now be detected from Mitchelstown Cave, Co. Tipperary, thanks to the installation of a new seismic station 60 metres underground by Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) staff members. The station at Mitchelstown Cave is one of nine seismic stations in Ireland but is the first to be installed underground. The Geophysics Section of DIAS operates the Irish National Seismic Network, under a joint agreement with Geological Survey Ireland, a division of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communic ..read more
