The BNP Paribas Open produced plenty of entertainment even though Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal played a combined two matches (two for Djokovic and none for Nadal after the Spaniard withdrew). They won’t play any between them at the Miami Open, as Nadal never planned to play and Djokovic pulled out following his early exit from the Indian Wells Masters. Still, this Miami event will be in good hands with a field featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Daniil Medvedev.    Medvedev finished runner-up to Alcaraz in the desert and they could have a final rematch on their hands in M ..read more

The Miami Open draw ceremony took place on Monday afternoon and there is a chance the final could be a rematch of the Indian Wells championship, as No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev landed on the opposite side from top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz. At the BNP Paribas Open, Alcaraz took down Jannik Sinner in the semis and Medvedev in the final. In the second leg of the Sunshine Double, the 20-year-old Spaniard can face only one of those two rivals. Both Sinner and Medvedev are in the bottom half of the bracket and would go head-to-head in the final four if they advance that far. Alcaraz’s projected semifina ..read more

Following the conclusion of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, the second of back-to-back 1000-point tournaments takes place this coming fortnight in Miami. Only 11 players (seven men, four women) have won the Sunshine Double, most recently on the men’s side Roger Federer (2017) and on the women’s side Iga Swiatek (2022). A mere three of those 11 players are active: Swiatek, Victoria Azarenka, and Novak Djokovic. Just two of those three are in Miami this year, as Djokovic recently withdrew. Having triumphed in Tennis Paradise on Sunday, Swiatek has a chance to complete the Sunshine Double ..read more

A return trip to one of his favorite tournaments proved to be just what the doctor ordered for Carlos Alcaraz. Alcaraz, who had not won a tournament since Wimbledon last summer and had not reached a final since the Cincinnati Masters, successfully defended his BNP Paribas Open title by beating Daniil Medvedev 7-6(5), 6-1 on Sunday afternoon. The world No. 2 took a thrilling first set and then raced away with the second to triumph in one hour and 42 minutes. Alcaraz and Medvedev will be squaring off for the sixth time in their careers and in a second consecutive Indian Wells Masters title match when they meet again on Sunday. Jannik Sinner’s winning streak is over. Fittingly, it was his biggest rival who ended it. Carlos Alcaraz recovered from a slow start to defeat Sinner 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday afternoon. The 20-year-old advanced after two hours and five minutes–not including an almost three-hour rain delay–to set up a showdown for the title against either Daniil Medvedev or Tommy Paul. Expert picks are back for the Indian Wells Masters semifinals on Saturday afternoon, when Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner renew their rivalry. A three-team panel previews the action and makes its predictions. (3) Jannik Sinner vs. (2) Carlos Alcaraz Ricky: It doesn’t get any bigger than this. Alcaraz vs. Sinner is currently the best rivalry in tennis and Saturday will also be a rematch of the 2023 Indian Wells semifinals. The Spaniard won that contest, but Sinner has since won two straight in the head-to-head series and has become the best player in the world–even if the rankings don’t ..read more

In the relatively forgotten BNP Paribas semifinal matchup compared to Carlos Alcaraz vs. Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Tommy Paul will battle on Saturday for a place in the championship of the season’s first Masters 1000 tournament. As usual, Paul has quietly gone about his business and avoided any chaos–such as what we witnessed on Thursday with a bee invasion during the Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev match followed by Medvedev’s mockery of Holger Rune’s short shorts. The no-nonsense American booked his spot in the final four by beating Alex Michelsen, Ugo Humbert, Luca Nardi, and Casper ..read more

Indian Wells bee invasion: Alcaraz vs. Zverev turns into “the most unusual match”

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Alexander Zverev is usually an interesting matchup. It certainly was yet again at the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday evening–but not for anything related to actual tennis. Alcaraz’s 6-3, 6-1 win was surprisingly lopsided, but it will be remembered for one specific reason: a bee invasion. Yes, Thursday’s quarterfinal clash was delayed for almost two hours at 1-1 in the first because a horde of bees swarmed center court. Alcaraz even got stung before sprinting off the court. Mohamed Lahyani suffered the same fate after hilariously announcing, “Play is suspended due to bee inva ..read more

What is already an amazing matchup and figures to be tennis’ best rivalry of the next decade will add another chapter when Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner collide in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open on Saturday afternoon. The head-to-head series is all tied up at 4-4, with Sinner leading 4-3 on the main tour (Alcaraz won a 2019 Challenger contest on the red clay of Alicante). They have faced each other once in Indian Wells, also in the semifinals just last season–when Alcaraz prevailed 7-6(4), 6-3. Sinner, however, has since turned the tide. The third-ranked Italian won 6-7(4), 6-4, 6 ..read more
