US prosecutors in New York have charged an Indian national with a failed attempt to assassinate an American citizen on US soil, according to an indictment that was newly unsealed on Wednesday. Authorities say that an unnamed Indian government official recruited 52-year-old Nikhil Gupta, who went on to contact someone he believed to be a hitman to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Pannun is a prominent Sikh activist and New York-based lawyer for the Punjabi secessionist group, Sikhs for Justice. The individual Gupta contacted was, however, not a hit man but an undercover officer working for the US ..read more

An agreement to land a proposed fibre optic cable running between India and Europe in the United Arab Emirates has highlighted how Gulf states and Israel are positioning themselves as potential partners on projects to develop new regional trade and connectivity routes. The 20,000-kilometre project, known as the Trans Europe Asia System (TEAS), would link Mumbai to Marseille via submarine cables and a terrestrial segment crossing the Arabian Peninsula. On Wednesday, Cinturion, the company behind the project, announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the Emirates Integrate ..read more

Drawing Muslim thinkers and politicians from across the world, the 1931 World Islamic Congress in Jerusalem was a watershed moment in Islamic politics. It marked the establishment of the Palestinian struggle as a pan-Arab and pan-Islamic cause, laying the groundwork for the eventual emergence of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.  The story of how the gathering came about provides a window into a world of largely forgotten international Muslim alliances and political experiments in the interwar period, which operated across imperial and state borders.  One of its main org ..read more

In a flash, the aura of invincibility was shattered. Images of Israeli commandos and soldiers being seized and taken hostage; of Hamas fighters paragliding over the all-domineering Israeli fence surrounding Gaza; of Israelis at a desert concert fleeing from oncoming Palestinian fighters; of Palestinians venturing into their families’ villages and towns for the first time since 1948 – all of this has left a trail of shock and awe in its wake. The talking heads are all out, deliberating, debating, and speculating. But one thing is certain: the script has flipped.  And as the world tries to ..read more

A Qatari court has dropped the death sentences imposed on eight Indian former naval officers, India’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.  The men were handed the death penalty in October, in charges that neither India nor Qatar specified.  The Financial Times and Reuters have reported that the men were found guilty of spying for Israel while working on a Qatari submarine programme, citing unnamed sources. India expressed “deep shock” at the time of the verdict, and said it would explore all legal options.  The foreign ministry said on Wednesday that the sentences had been ..read more

A group representing British Muslims has condemned a Conservative party politician for attending an event in parliament to celebrate the consecration of a Hindu temple built on the site of a destroyed mosque in India. MP Bob Blackman attended the gathering in the House of Commons on 16 January. It was organised by a British Hindu group, Sanatan Sanstha UK, known for its support for Hindu nationalism. The event was organised ahead of a controversial ceremony held on 22 January in Ayodhya, India, in which India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated the contentious Ram Temple, wh ..read more

The desperate scenes around India of thousands of labourers queueing up to work in Israel is the surest sign yet that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-touted economic policies have failed to meet the needs of his people, economists and trade unionists in India have told Middle East Eye. New Delhi’s decision to encourage and facilitate sending its citizens to Israel as part of a plan to replace Palestinian workers has faced a barrage of criticism, as Israel continues to exercise what experts are calling a genocide in Gaza. The Israeli government cancelled the work permits of tens of thousan ..read more

The Israeli container shipping company ZIM isn’t feeling a lot of love in the Middle East today. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have vowed to target Israeli-linked ships with ballistic missiles and drones and ZIM has been forced to divert its vessels from the Red Sea to a more arduous journey around Africa to avoid attacks. It’s a development that should have rattled its stock price, but instead, pickers are loving the tense geo-political situation.  ZIM’s share price is up a whopping 50 percent since attacks against vessels in the Red Sea intensified last month. And it isn’t alone. Sha ..read more

Over the past decade, India and Israel have grown increasingly closer as partners and allies, so much so that both countries have begun to resemble each other. And it’s in India’s occupation of Kashmir and Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories that the similarities are most stark. They both adopt similar tactics when seizing lands, displacing people, criminalising dissent, muzzling journalists, and controlling people’s movements, argues Middle East Eye journalist Azad Essa. “For both Israel and India, and Zionism and Hindutva, controlling Palestine and Kashmir are existenti ..read more
