SAKOBS GC1078 Metal Detector – Worth Buying?

SAKOBS is a name many won’t be familiar with. They are a Chinese brand producing entry-level machines at prices below the mainstream brands. The company recently sent us two machines plus a pinpointer to review. The machine we are looking at here is the GC1078. At first glance, the GC1078 looks like a bright yellow Minelab Vanquish. This is mainly due to the collapsible stem design which, I won’t say “copies” the Vanquish but it is certainly very close. It also collapses to the same size as the Vanquish. The large yellow control box attaches to the stem in a better way than the Vanquish. On th ..read more

These days if you are in the market for a budget metal detector the choices are wide but the quality is often lacking. There are countless cheap Chinese metal detectors on the market but nearly all of them are either poor quality and cost very little or poor quality and grossly overpriced. There are one or two exceptions. DR.ÖTEK produces some budget machines that fare pretty well although not yet up to the standards of big-name brands such as Nokta, Minelab, XP and Garrett.  So what do you do if you want quality but you don’t want to spend a fortune? Well, up to now I would have pointed ..read more

The market for Metal Detector Pinpointers has been more or less dominated by three brands over the past few years. Garrett, XP and Nokta. Of course, there are plenty of alternatives out there but they tend to be either really cheap copies that don’t work very well or from lesser-known brands that are too costly for what they are.  But what if you could get a top-quality pinpointer, with great features for a very reasonable price? The DR.ÖTEK MT6-PRO might be that pinpointer. The MT6-PRO has now been released to the market but we had the opportunity to test one over the past few months. Th ..read more

The budget metal detector market has changed beyond all recognition over the past few years. It used to be the case that you get what you pay for. Until Nokta released the Simplex+. A machine that incorporated a lot of higher-end features at an entry-level price point. It proved to be extremely popular.  This year, Minelab finally realised that not everyone needs or wants a simultaneous multi-frequency machine and so, released their own budget detector in the form of the X-TERRA PRO. This is a machine styled on the Equinox but instead of incorporating simultaneous multi-frequencies, it pr ..read more

Quest Air – Quest Partners With Ukraine’s Air MD

Some of you may remember the Kickstarter project for the “Air MD” that sprung to life back in 2018. The Air MD is a wireless metal detector that uses your mobile phone as the controller. No cables and pretty much any smartphone will do as long as it can run the Air MD app.  The company raised the working capital however, through a series of missteps and tech problems the machines were slow in coming to fruition. And what with a worldwide pandemic and a war to contend with it must have been difficult to carry on production in a sustained manner.  It was clear therefore that some sort ..read more

Treasure Hunting World » Metal Detector News

The Minelab Manticore has been hailed as a game-changer. A big leap forward in the world of metal detectors. With its newly designed control panel and innovative 2D screen, the Manticore set the benchmark for others to follow. Or does it? One of the main selling points of the Manticore was the claim that it “puts 50% more power into the ground”. This phrase was repeated over and over again throughout all of the company’s marketing and promo material and extensively shared on social media.  However, this claim has recently been called into question by Merrill over at Metal Detecting NYC an ..read more

Quest metal detectors have always been able to bring out machines that perform superbly well and do it with more panache than other brands. Their bright orange livery is unmistakable and whilst not exactly a household name in the UK, they are pretty well known throughout Europe and Asia.  But Quest is not all about style over substance. They produce some of the best machines on the market. Their X10 Pro is still the best bang for your buck budget detector out there, and the Q30+ is the best single-frequency machine I have ever used on the beach. It handles wet sand mineralization with eas ..read more
