Gearing up for 2025 elections kblocher@hslf.org Mon, 02/03/2025 - 08:29 As we often say, every year is an election year. And every election gives us an opportunity to improve prospects for the lives of millions of animals. Last year, HSLF proudly supported 775 candidates up and down the ballot, and a substantial number of them—736, or 95%—won their races. Now, we’re ready to continue the fight in 2025, and we’re asking you to join us at the ballot box for animals, because with the new year comes a new set of elections for federal, state, and local offices. In 2024, the entire U.S. House of Rep ..read more

Undercover investigation of Nevada pet stores reveals truth behind puppy’s death kblocher@hslf.org Wed, 01/22/2025 - 09:23 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block In a pet store’s back room, a tiny brown-and-white Havanese puppy was vomiting and lethargic—and left entirely alone in a pen. On seeing her in that state, our undercover investigator alerted Puppy Heaven’s manager, urging that the dog needed to be seen by a veterinarian. When the staff refused, the investigator alerted law enforcement authorities, who insisted that the store manager take Cindy Lou to a veterinarian. It was too late. At the ..read more

With enforcement, the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act will show its teeth kblocher@hslf.org Thu, 01/16/2025 - 22:02 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block With allies and supporters, we have been doing all that we can to keep more sharks swimming safely in oceans all over the world. For years, we advocated for the passage of the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act, which President Biden signed into law in December 2022, with strong bipartisan support. We were pleased that recently the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration completed a comprehensive review of the Act’s impact on shark fishing re ..read more

Wolves score a win in the fight over their protections in the US kblocher@hslf.org Mon, 01/13/2025 - 21:28 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block In a victory for wolves, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently denied two petitions filed by trophy hunting organizations aimed at removing federal Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in the Western Great Lakes region and reducing or removing protections for wolves in other areas of the lower 48 states. Wolves (outside of the Northern Rocky Mountain region) remain safely protected—at least for now. But the attempt to remove their protection ..read more

Remembering Jimmy Carter’s legacy—and upholding it kblocher@hslf.org Fri, 01/10/2025 - 20:51 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block Inevitably, the passing of an American president offers an opportunity to think not only about an individual’s achievements in office, but to reflect on what those achievements say about our nation, and who we are, and what we can be. In this regard, Jimmy Carter leaves one of the richest legacies of anyone who has ever occupied the White House. Through the lens of concern for animals, and from the benefit of half a century since he left office, we can see and admire th ..read more

Breaking: Grizzly bears will retain key Endangered Species Act protections kblocher@hslf.org Thu, 01/09/2025 - 17:42 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block On Wednesday afternoon, in a move supporting the notion that the species needs more time to recover, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that it would not prematurely remove Endangered Species Act protections from grizzly bears living in the Greater Yellowstone and Northern Continental Divide ecosystems—the two largest populations in the continental U.S. Wyoming and Montana had petitioned the agency to delist grizzly bears and turn the m ..read more

Good news to start 2025: These state laws are now in place for animals in the U.S.  kblocher@hslf.org Mon, 01/06/2025 - 19:17 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block Every day of every year, we take meaningful action to create a better world for animals. In the U.S., our State Affairs team works across the country to help protect animals in a variety of ways. One of the most important involves partnering with elected officials, law enforcement agencies, individual advocates and other parties to ensure that animal welfare legislation is put into place and then properly enforced. In 2025, several signi ..read more

In 2024 we scored victories for chimps and countless other animals suffering in laboratories kblocher@hslf.org Tue, 12/24/2024 - 18:37 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block In 1975, when she was just a year old, a chimpanzee later named Montessa was sold to a New Mexico laboratory owned by the U.S. government. Unbelievably, nearly 50 years later, Montessa is still locked in the same laboratory. Instead of growing up in the wild in Africa (where she was likely born before being captured), with a community that would have included her mother, father and siblings, Montessa spent the first three decade ..read more

How we worked to save wild animals all over the world in 2024 kblocher@hslf.org Sun, 12/22/2024 - 01:25 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block One of the urgencies that defines our mission in this era is the rapidly increasing threat to wild animals all over the world. Under the overwhelming pressures of biodiversity loss, shrinking habitats and climate change, untold numbers of wild animals also face the cruelty of the illegal wildlife trade, trophy hunting, predator control and businesses that want to lock them in cages, pools, circus rings or petting zoos for entertainment. Others simply find the ..read more

We’re making dogs and cats the winners in the fight against puppy and kitten mills kblocher@hslf.org Thu, 12/12/2024 - 20:07 By Sara Amundson and Kitty Block Our Animal Rescue Team deployed to Milburn, Oklahoma, in March of this year to help the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office respond to alleged cruelty at two puppy mills. The team found that dogs and puppies were living without proper veterinary care—some with only spotty access to shelter and clean water—all so that they could be bred at high volume and sold online and at a notorious flea market. It was deeply inspiring to see our team com ..read more
