Mini Boogie equals maxi fun!

The mini what?  The mini boogie!  Just like the name implies, it's a miniature bodyboard!   Let's set the scene:   You're hanging at the beach.  You spent the morning bodyboarding and are just chilling on your beach chair when the tide change reveals a little barreling nugget of a wave on a little sandbar.  It's not quite big enough for the bodyboard, but would be ideal for your other wave riding tool...the mini boogie!  You hold it in front of you and kick out with your fins on.  It's super-easy to duck dive under waves, and you can use it f ..read more

How to correctly put on your swimfins and enter/exit the water

The title of this blog seems obvious enough.  Just grab your fin and pull back on the strap to get it on your foot, right?  How hard can that be?  But did you know that putting your fin on incorrectly can prematurely cause the demise of your fins?  Pulling back on the strap can weaken the rubber and eventually cause the strap to snap.   When it comes to getting into the surf, it sometimes feels like you're a circus clown with those big, floppy shoes and falling on your face in the sand with crowds watching and waiting to post a video of your moment on Kookslams i ..read more

Surf Mats are a worthy addition to your wave riding tool box

Krypt Surf Mats Have you ever heard of "mat surfing"?  If you grew up before the age of the bodyboard, you probably called it a "raft", or if you're REALLY vintage, you might recall an Australian invention dating way back to the early 1930s called a "Surfoplane".   These rectangular air-filled fun bags are making a comeback!  They've enjoyed underground status since the 60s and 70s when legendary California wave rider George Greenough took mat riding to the next level in the point break waves of Santa Barbara and later, northern New South Wales in Australia.  ..read more

The Man Who Invented the Bodyboard

Anyone who has been involved in the sport of bodyboarding knows that Tom Morey, an inventor, musician, surfer, entrepreneur, mathematician and engineer originally from Michigan crafted the first modern bodyboard, which he called the Boogie (see our blog post about this) in 1971.   Since then, Tom has kept quite busy coming up with new surf craft, inventing things and in general, thinking forward.  To those of us that have devoted our lives to riding bodyboards, Tom has always been regarded as somewhat of a living deity, garnering praise, reluctantly I might add, for his i ..read more

In the course of my bodyboarding life, which began back in 1979, I've had the privilege of traveling the globe riding waves and meeting incredible characters who became lifelong friends.  Many of those people were right here in Southern California where I've made my home since 1987.  Dave Long is one of those guys.  (Dave!) I first met Dave right after moving from the east coast.  We met working many of the Morey Boogie contest series events up and down the coast.  He and his dad Don were fixtures at these events, and Dave has remained committed to the sport for over ..read more

Since starting eBodyboarding.com in 1999, I've fielded just about every question you can imagine and many you probably haven't about bodyboards.  I am the one that answers all the Booger Picker submissions as well as recommends boards to customers in person here at our location and on the phone, so I'm pretty quick at determining what should work for a given rider.  One thing that confuses a lot of new riders is the differences and effects of different core materials and stiffeners.   Let's start by taking a brief trip down memory lane.   For the first 20 years after t ..read more

Get your kid out in the ocean!

Tom Morey, the inventor of the bodyboard could likely never have fathomed that nearly every beach home has more bodyboards in their garage than bikes.  The bodyboard is as necessary for a great beach day as a bucket and shovel, and any kid worth their salt should experience the joy of riding a wave on a bodyboard.     Which board to buy though?  The age-old quandary is that most parents don't want to spend a bundle on a board that their kid is going to thrash or outgrow in one summer.  So, here's a basic guide to finding the right board for a young rider.   *Boa ..read more

The Quintessential Ben Severson

When bodyboarding talk turns to our founding fathers, the name Ben Severson inevitably weaves it's way into the conversation.  For those of you blissfully unaware, Ben grew up in Hawaii and was part of the crew at Sandy Beach during the early 1980s that included some of the absolute legends of our sport including JP Patterson, Pat Caldwell, Jack Lindholm, Keith Sasaki and photographer/videographer Tom Boyle (among others).  These guys forged a path of bodyboarding ingenuity on a daily basis at Sandy's, coming up with stuff that have become status quo like dropknee riding, the El ..read more

Bodyboarding- what is it about this sport?
eBodyboarding Blog

We all ask ourselves the title question at some point during our bodyboarding lives. What is it about this sport?  I think the answer lies way back to the first time you experienced riding waves.   For many of us, that happened at a very young age- maybe on vacation with the family, or if you were lucky enough to grow up near the beach, perhaps a carefree summer day with your friends led you to the sport.   That last word, "sport".  When we start, it's really just an "activity".  For me, my earliest wave riding memories were around age 9 or 10.  I grew up about 1 ..read more
