Author: alabamatoy Subject: Backwoods Poorman's Stick Welding Posted: 29 March 2024 at 1:32pm I had a last-minute change of plans and can't make the Battelle thing tomorrow.  My bees are being delivered! Brad, you're welcome to borrow this welder and try it out, but obviously I wont be there to bring it to you.  The reason for the jumper cables was to allow setup/use without removal of the batteries.  You have to *disconnect* the batteries in order to use the jumper cables to arrange the batteries in serial for 24V, but its not necessary to remove the batteries from ..read more

Author: 98TJ Subject: Backwoods Poorman's Stick Welding Posted: 28 March 2024 at 7:50pm Have you tried welding some thick flat bar with that welder?  Sometimes I need to weld on the gates near our cabin and some of that steel is 3/8" and 1/2".  Multiple passes would be fine ..read more

Yes, nice little rig.  Fits in the bag at right, including the dedicated jumper cables.  Its wire feed, uses flux wire since I dont want to carry around a gas bottle and regulator, but it will work with gas. Dunno what the interest is.  In my limited experience with it, seems to work well, but really needs 2 batteries for 24V power.  On 12V, its really not able to penetrate sufficiently for structural welds.  I ..read more

Author: 98TJ Subject: Backwoods Poorman's Stick Welding Posted: 26 March 2024 at 9:30am That was the issue with the 7018 1/8, it would not hold an arc.  It would spark a little and then stick or go out.  It did the same as 6011 5/32 when I tried to go a little bigger with 6011. I'm  using two large agm batteries.  I assume they are deep cycle batteries but I don't  know.  Maybe two cranking batteries would put out more current. That 3/32 7018 might be perfect. Author: 83K10 Subject: Backwoods Poorman's Stick Welding Posted: 26 March 2024 at 6:07am 3/32 still will do a lot. Holding a nice tight arc with a 1/8 will help as well.  Are you running dcen or dcep? This matters to how well the electrode will melt.  ..read more
