BELLA VISTA – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials announced a minimum-security incarcerated person who walked away from Sugar Pine Conservation Camp in Shasta County on March 25, 2024, was apprehended today. At approximately 7:15 a.m., Joseph Stewart, 31, was apprehended without incident by Sugar Pine Conservation Camp staff in the city of Redding. SAN QUENTIN – Condemned person Richard D. Turner passed away at an outside medical facility on Saturday, March 23, 2024, while incarcerated at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. He was 65 years old. Turner was pronounced deceased by medical staff at 3:45 a.m. with a manner of death identified as natural causes. The Marin County Coroner’s Office will determine his official cause of death. Turner was admitted to CDCR on April 16, 1980, from San Bernardino County to serve life without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder. SAN DIEGO – California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials announced an incarcerated person who walked away from the Male Community Reentry Program (MCRP) in San Diego on March 15, 2024, was taken into custody on March 24, 2024. At approximately 7:50 p.m., Quintin G. Wilkerson, 53, was arrested in the city of Escondido by the Escondido Police Department following a short foot pursuit. SOLEDAD – The Correctional Training Facility (CTF) Investigative Services Unit is investigating the death of an incarcerated person who died after he attacked correctional officers during an altercation. On March 21, 2024, at approximately 11 a.m., officers were releasing people from their cells. Incarcerated person Joseph Altamirano yelled at and then struck an officer with his fist. SAN QUENTIN – Juan Inzunza, who was serving a condemned sentence at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (SQRC), died March 7, 2024, while receiving care at an outside medical facility. He was 40 years old. Inzunza was found unresponsive in his cell at 9:46 p.m. on the same day of his death. SQRC staff immediately performed life-saving measures and transferred him to an outside hospital for a higher level of care. SAN QUENTIN – Condemned individual Melvin Turner passed away at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center on Feb. 24, 2024, at 6:04 p.m. He was 67 years old. Turner was sentenced in Los Angeles County on Aug. 29, 1979, and placed on condemned status. He was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, vehicle theft, and first-degree robbery attempt.    Turner and a co-defendant shot two people execution-style in an airport hangar while attempting to steal the victim’s sports car.  There are currently 646 condemned persons in CDCR. Donovan Correctional Facility (RJD) as a homicide.
