Before the pandemic, my cousin and I frequently ate wanton noodles at Ho Seng Kee, a restaurant in City Square. I hadn’t had it in a long time and since we were nearby, I decided to have a meal there before we returned to Singapore.
I arrived at the restaurant at noon and saw that it went through some renovations since the last time I was there. It was bigger, for one, and it was a lot tidier.
I was seated at their new expanded area and placed my order via the QR code. Although the restaurant was renovated, the meu was mostly the same as before. Even though I was tempted by their Chee Kway, I ..read more

After V Hotel, the next budget hotel we stayed at was the Zamburger Bliss Hotel located a short distance away. The first thing you may notice is that the name sounds a lot like “hamburger” and the hotel sure makes the most of it as hotel lobby was full of hamburger plushies.
When we entered the lobby, I immediately found it warm and stuffy. The aircon didn’t seem to be on. My colleagues chose rooms facing the road while I picked a quiet corner room at the back. But this time, my room was on the third floor, and, like V Hotel, there was no elevator. So, I had to drag myself and my luggage all t ..read more

Let’s put aside restaurants and cafes for the moment. I think it’s time we talked about Mamak food stalls, in particular Restoran E&Y, one of the most popular Mamak food stalls in Johor Bahru and my favourite place for a late-night supper.
It serves delicious Indian food, is open twenty-four hours a day and is also located next to Plaza Pelangi. You’d be hard pressed to find a seat since it’s almost always a full house, but they recently took over the neighbouring unit, making getting a seat easier.
They have a huge menu that includes roti prata, nasi lemak, mutton soup, fried chicken and ..read more

We’ve been receiving a lot of requests for ‘good and cheap’ budget hotel recommendations in Johor Bahru. So, we’ll be reviewing the two budget hotels we stayed at during our company trip to JB last week.
In this blog, we’ll share our experience at V Hotel. It’s a three-storey shophouse nestled in a row of similar shophouses. It doesn’t have an elevator, so be prepared to take the stairs if your room happens to be on the third floor. It’s been given and fresh coat of paint and was recently renovated, making it look like new.
I chose this hotel because it’s only four shophouses from our favourit ..read more

When I was at Sentosa the other day for a meeting, I noticed a large, classy, white and black building with the words “Good Old Days” on the front. For those who don’t know about it, Good Old Days is a halal food court known for its affordable prices. And that day, there was a promotion where I could buy two nasi lemak sets for $11. Given my love for nasi lemak, I couldn’t resist this promotion.
When I arrived at 6pm that Thursday, the restaurant was empty aside from a couple sleeping at one of the tables. The menu wasn’t big, but it had a good selection of local and western delights, sides, k ..read more

One cold, rainy evening, my colleague and I were at Bugis Junction attending the last of a long string of meetings. The cold weather put us in the mood for something spicy, so I suggested eating at the Monster Curry restaurant in the basement, known for its popular Japanese Curry.
It’s been years since I’ve eaten at a Monster Curry. Back then, it was lauded as the best Japanese curry restaurant in Singapore. I hoped that it still as good as back then.
We arrived to find a line in front of the restaurant. We were informed that it would take around fifteen minutes to get to us, so we decided to ..read more

Recently, Polar introduced its Fruity Fluffy Rolls series consisting of three new Swiss roll flavours, Golden Mango, Tropical Pink Guava, and Lychee Rose. I was lucky enough to get my hands on them.
After thoroughly sampling all of them, I now present to you my honest opinions.
Golden Mango
Starting off with my favourite of the three, the Golden Mango Roll was soft and fluffy, the cream was sweet and rich, and the mango flavour was mild but able to permeate through the whole pastry.
The sourness of the mango perfectly balances the sweet pastry, making it light and not overly sweet. The small ..read more

This year, instead of traveling far, I decided to spend my birthday closer to my family in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Taking this opportunity, I decided to choose another hotel to stay in rather than my usual one. I was recommended by a friend to try Crystal Crown Hotel, for their services and affordable hotel rental rates. I went ahead with Agoda and made a booking for their Executive Studio room.
Wherever I go, whichever hotel I stay, I will always make my standard requests such as a high floor, quiet room, non-smoking room, and good view, hence, I dropped the hotel management ..read more
