Waterford continues to expand its diverse portfolio of terroir-focused Irish whiskeys. Today we’re taking a look at a recent addition to the Arcadian Farm Origin Series which, like last year’s peated offerings, showcases “maverick farming” with a focus on heritage grains. The second offering is an all cuvee expression of Waterford’s Organic Gaia. Let’s check them out. Waterford Distillery Heritage Hunter – The first in yet another Waterford series, this time focusing on the use of heritage grains, this whiskey is made from barley named after the pioneering plant breeder Dr. Herbert Hunter, wh ..read more

Review: Clonakilty Irish Whiskey 32 Years Old

Clonakilty continues to push boundaries when it comes to expectations around Irish whiskey — and with this release what it’s really pushing is age. This release hits a whopping 32 years of age, spending that time in oloroso sherry hogsheads, with 8 of those years in a maritime warehouse on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. On cracking open and pouring my sample, I was immediately taken aback by a whiskey that took me completely off guard. The nose is immense and heavy, offering aromas of mushroom, Amontillado sherry, and finally a bold cereal character that slowly fades to reveal honeyed malt n ..read more

This is our fifth round with a Puncher’s Chance whiskey release, and this time out we’re getting something different from the brand’s creators at Wolf Spirit: The Unified Belt is a blend of three whiskeys — two bourbons and an Irish whiskey. This is the first transcontinental blend from the brand, though Irish-American combos are increasingly common, with recent offerings from Brothership and Keeper’s Heart gracing our pages of late. Here’s what’s in the mix: First into the ring is a four-year-old high-rye base Kentucky Straight Bourbon distilled with a proprietary yeast and aged to fou ..read more

Ireland and Iberia: Kindred Spirits – An Interview with Irish Distillers’ Billy Leighton

Quick geography lesson for those who slept through it in school. The Iberian Peninsula is a region of southwestern Europe that includes most of Spain and Portugal, a tiny bit of southern France, and Gibraltar. Like Scotch, Irish whiskey has a long tradition of aging in ex-sherry casks that hail from this part of the world. The ex-bourbon, American oak backbone of so many Irish and Scotch whiskeys today really didn’t become the norm until the 1960s. Before that, it was often wine cask-aged, with sherry from Spain leading the way. In Ireland, no brand has embraced this original Iberian influenc ..read more

The Top 10 Whiskeys of 2023

It was another tough year for the whisky nerds among us – which is, well, all of us – as we tried to pare down the hundreds of options we reviewed throughout 2023 and come up with a list of the ten that excited us the most. Yes, we heard your cries from last year: Too many luxe unicorns, not enough attainable juice. We’ve tempered our taste for four-figure spirits this time around, and while most of the whiskeys we picked for 2023 cost more than $100, only one lands in what we’d consider unicorn territory. That said, it really deserves to be represented here, so we couldn’t leave it out. Want ..read more
