We all get evicted from a warm comfortable bubble being thrust into this world knowing less than nothing. It’s scary. It’s cold. There’s air instead of fluid to breathe. We scream! Suddenly a familiar voice, a newfound scent, and loving contact makes our existence beautiful. We meet our mom for the first time and now it’s all going to be ok! Moms have special powers. They make the world go round. They can fix a boo-boo with a kiss. They can find the time to be breadwinners AND never miss a play-date! Everyone has a mom, but I’m the luckiest- I’ve many moms in my life. Starting with my mother ..read more

Spring has sprung and finally the weather is gorgeous again! My family absolutely loves to get some peat pellets and plant some seeds to watch grow and eventually harvest. Last year we tried pumpkins and we actually had a few come in!! This interest for me started with my Papa, Phil. Papa LOVED gardening. He used to tell me stories about growing up poor with 12 other brothers and sisters and how they had to plant vegetables and keep animals so they could survive. He always told me he never ate as well as he did when he was poor. As he got older, he would go to his friend Mike’s house and culti ..read more

I’m by far the luckiest guy I have ever met. No joke, ask anyone who knows me- if my name can be picked to win something, I can almost bank on it. I won a free wedding from a radio station! I’ve won trips while on vacation! I have a secret, and you won’t have to drop $29.95+S&H on some book to learn it (though, not a bad idea). The secret is this- I’m a firm and honest believer in karma. You get what you put into this world. If you constantly try to help others with no expectation of anything in return, then more often than not, you will be pleasantly surprised. I mean, the thing I’m most ..read more

Medicare Deductible Change For 2022

Every year, as I’m sure you know, medicare updates their cost of premiums and deductibles. For 2022, the monthly cost of Medicare is up to $170.10, an increase of $21.60 from 2021. Deductibles (what you have to pay out of pocket per year before Medicare pays a penny) is $233, up $30 from costs in 2021. The reason for the DRAMATIC changes this year are due to rising prices and utilization (i.e. more medicare aged people and inflation), an agreed increase of $3/mo that was set to end in 2021- but won’t, and a new Alzheimer medication (Aduhelm) that medicare is still unsure if they will cover (if ..read more

I’m human, I have weaknesses. I am no better or worse than anyone else. For me, weaknesses are an opportunity to be more introspective. In 2021 I realized I clump time into arbitrary chunks. “I had a bad day” could mean I had a rough 15 minutes and so my whole day is ruined. I’ve been working hard to understand why I do that and if it’s not helpful, I try to take steps to change it. Now I try and break up days into early AM, Mid AM, afternoon, evening, & night. I also let the pandemic let some steam out of my exercise routine, so I also started self-defense classes, Krav Maga. I became an ..read more

I see a lot of patients with chronic pain. Pain that started some time ago, maybe without specific cause, and has been consistently intermittent with activity. I get asked a lot of questions about pain and the effect of injury and I’ve answered a lot of people. Often. Your Back Pain and Smoking

Do you really need another reason to quit smoking? Ok, you got it. People often describe their lower back pain as a real pain in the butt, literally. What many do not know is that researchers are finding stronger and stronger evidence between smoking and lower back pain- which lends itself to the play on words: skip the butt to soothe the butt Last week I spoke on the calorie connection to lower back pain. This week we’re all about smoking cessation for back pain eradication. Yes, the rhymes and word play are over Or are they? No. No they are not It’s easy to vilify both cigarette companies an ..read more
