World Health Day 2024 – How Veganism Does, and Could, Affect Global Health.

By Dr Rebecca E Jones Sunday, April 7th, marks World Health Day 2024, and this year’s theme is ‘My Health, My Right’. As most vegans do, I believe that a plant-based diet is the answer to almost everything. But this time, I’m not alone. It seems that in recent years, the world’s scientific gaze is shifting towards veganism as the answer to the globe’s lifestyle related disease, world famine, and climate disaster. In the UK, veganism is booming, and almost 5% of the UK population is now vegan. And we’re not alone; in the US, around 4% of people identify as vegan, and Australia is in the lea ..read more

Why Don’t We Talk About Miscarriage?
The Vegan Doctor Blog
by The Vegan Doctor

By Dr Rebecca E Jones I’ve had two miscarriages, and lost 3 babies. Why is it so hard to say those words out loud, or type them out for public reading? Because nobody talks about miscarriage. I’m a GP, so in the quiet, confidential space that is my consulting room, I do hear these words. People speak them with confused upset, in hushed tones, and it’s one of the only times that I have to question whether I really can say “me too”. We know those two words have been a powerful tool for women seeking support in extremely difficult situations. But they also apply to the many other day-to-day sc ..read more

Plant-Based Diets and Chronic Illness
The Vegan Doctor Blog

By Dr Rebecca E Jones When I first started writing as The Vegan Doctor, my motivation was to bring useful advice from a doctor’s point of view to other ethical vegans. As time went on and I studied more, I began to realize the enormous health benefits of a plant-based diet. I learned more about the beneficial effects of a vegan diet on many chronic diseases, so much so that I always recommend a plant-based diet (along with other NHS suggested options, of course) to my patients who are looking to change their lifestyles and take control of their health. There are many, many diets that experts ..read more

The Vegan Doctor Helps You Defend Veganism To Your Doctor
The Vegan Doctor Blog

(Originally published in Raise Vegan magazine in September 2018) The main reason I started my blog, The Vegan Doctor, was because I read so many stories about vegans having bad experiences with their own doctor. It saddened me that a generally compassionate group of people were not receiving that same level of compassion when it was most needed. The medical profession is starting to become more accepting of the vegan movement and of the benefits of a plant-based diet. However, many vegans may still come up against tough barriers and opinions when discussing their vegan lifestyle with their doc ..read more

Does it really matter that another celebrity has given up veganism?

This week, news was published that Zac Efron was no longer vegan. Just add him to the long list of famous people half-heartedly giving the lifestyle a go, realising it’s not for them, and very publicly announcing their return to omnivore status. Or more often than not, an even more carnivorous diet than they had before.  But does any of it really matter? When trends and fads come and go in the often seemingly  vacuous world of celebrity, does anyone really care that yet another star has given up on veganism? Well, yes they do, actually. I care. I think that other vegans care. But wh ..read more

Could the Handmaids teach us about more than human rights?

“Handmaid’s Tale Milk Train.” I typed the words into the search engine after pausing the episode I was currently watching. ‘It can’t be unintentional’, I thought. Two women who had been raped, brutalized, exploited, and then finally had their children taken away from them, had found themselves during an escape attempt, floating in a big tank of milk on a train out of Gilead. I wanted confirmation that I wasn’t the only one to see the symbolism. June and Janine wading through the precious milk of other females who have been similarly mistreated. But seemingly, I was the only one. The articles I ..read more

Supplements for a breast(/chest)feeding parent

As you may have read in a recent IG post I made, my little one and I hit 2 years of breastfeeding this week. I can’t quite believe we made it this far! Although I know it’s not the case for everyone, it has been a relatively smooth journey for us. But this doesn’t mean I haven’t had to plan and consider certain aspects, such as what supplements I’m taking. As a vegan, I take regular supplements including vitamins B12 and D. But as I’ve been feeding not just myself, but also my little one, I’ve upped my game a bit. I thought it might be useful to share what I take, and my reasoning, for anyone ..read more

Toddlers and supplements – is Veg 1 suitable for a 2 year old?
The Vegan Doctor Blog

We recently got our delivery of Veg 1, the vegan multivitamin from The Vegan Society, and I quickly noticed that the packaging had changed. It’s now in a nice shiny tin, which means they’ve ditched the plastic, yay! But I was alarmed to see that where on the back where the instructions can be found, rather than stating children over 2 years old can take half a tablet a day, it now says children over 3 years old. This worried me because I’d recently been giving my 2 year old half a pill on most days. So, it was time to investigate! Right then. Each Veg 1 tablet contains: Vitamin D, 20mcg Vita ..read more
