Preach the Word!

Who among us has never wrestled with pride? It is a battle common to all of us, and each of us can succumb, as seen in the lives of kings Amaziah and Uzziah. Constant vigilance is required for the Christian if we are to keep pride at bay, remaining humble before the Lord.

What exactly is the “rest” offered by God? To some, God’s rest was seen as a day, or perhaps as a land. The writer of Hebrews shows that it is neither; it is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us be diligent to enter the rest of God by believing upon Jesus in faith!

As wonderful as it was for the kingdom to be restored to the Davidic line following the threat of the usurping evil Queen Athaliah, Joash had his own mix of right and wrong. He was the right king, but (like all of us) it was possible for him to follow the wrong influences.

The marriage into Ahab’s family introduced Ahab’s wicked influence into the Davidic line, resulting in murder, political chaos, and even the usurpation of the Davidic line itself. Spoiler alert: God’s promises never fail! His plan of salvation through Jesus does not depend on us, nor can even the devil put it at risk.

Jehoshaphat had a true desire to seek the Lord, following God in faith. The sad thing is that he did it inconsistently. Perhaps that’s something to which many of us can relate, as we each struggle with faithfulness. The good news for us? Jesus is faithful! He is faithful to us, despite our faithlessness to Him.

Why the incarnation? Because it was essential for us to be saved. Jesus had to be made our Brother, if He was to redeem us as our Priest. He had to be made like us, if He was to save us.

King Jehoshaphat was someone who jumped in and out of faithfulness. It wasn’t that he didn’t love the Lord and seek Him in true worship…he did! But Jehoshaphat didn’t do it consistently. Did God preserve him? Sure…but Jehoshaphat could have saved himself (and his nation!) a lot of trouble along the way.

The disciples (like all of us) were slow to believe the resurrection of Jesus. And their lack of faith kept them from joy. They could not rejoice in a Risen Messiah, when they did not believe it.
For those who do not yet believe in Jesus, this is just another day in a long series of days that inevitably leads to death, even despair. Yet for those who do believe (who have faith) in Jesus as the Risen Savior, Resurrection Sunday (and every Sunday!) is a day of great joy!

Asa was supposed to constantly rely upon the Lord his God, trusting always in Him. So are we. The only difference is that our hope for doing so is not in us; it’s in Jesus.

Knowing that the Hebrew Christians to whom this book was addressed were starting to turn back to the sacrificial system of the past, the author of the book of Hebrews called them back to simple faith in Jesus. Jesus is awesome! He is better than any angel – better than any prophet – better than any priest and any sacrifice. Jesus is better, period. He is the very best – He is Himself the supreme God!
