Happy Holidays? “What are you doing for the Thanksgiving holiday?”, seems like an innocuous question, only for some it is a springboard into tears and a beginning to a spiraling depression. Recently, I asked my yoga teacher this question as I was leaving class, when she paused and teared up saying, “You wouldn’t know, but this is a hard holiday for me. I will probably spend the day crying if I am not volunteering somewhere.” I was surprised by the sudden shift in her demeanor. She is funny and warm and seems altogether, so her sudden tearful state threw me. It also reminded me that what we se ..read more

Patience Is a Virtue This Fall Fall officially starts September 23rd this year. Usually, the onset of Fall means it is time to prepare the lawn for a beautiful Spring. Though it may seem early since Spring is 190 days away, Fall is generally the time you sow seeds for a beautiful Spring yard by preparing the soil and overseeding your grass. However, patience will be a needed virtue this year since Maryland is experiencing dry, and in some places, drought conditions. As a result, we must change how we prepare our lawns for their Spring glory. In the past, improving soil conditions and overseed ..read more

How do you keep flies out of the kitchen? Put a pile of poop in the garden.Though this joke is funny, flies are no joke at all. Flies love poop and decaying matter. When they land on your food, they secrete digestive juices onto your food so they can suck up bits of it. They lick your sweat when they land on you. They can carry diseases like anthrax, cholera, salmonella, tuberculosis, and typhoid. They are gross! ANDThey are a necessary part of our ecosystem. They do clean up decaying matter and they are a food source for many of life’s creatures (my chickens love them). SO……how can we live an ..read more

Mosquitos Summer bugs are on their way, or in some cases, may already be taking up residence in your yard and home. The top three bugs that plague us in the Spring and Summer are: mosquitoes, ants, and flies. They are the wet blankets to outdoor and indoor activities. They make us want to reach for the bug spray. Reaching for the bug spray and hiring companies to shower our lawns with poison however, though tempting, isn’t a sustainable solution. If we use potent chemicals to kill off the bugs, we damage our air, soil and water as well as indiscriminately destroying the bug population we n ..read more

Spring is an in between time, where the old moves out and the new ushers in. Everything is getting spruced up to begin again.  The fallow season of winter has ended and new green is beginning to sprout.  Look around the neighborhood and you will notice the lime green tips of evergreens decorating the ends of pine tree boughs.  People are raking up the last bits of leaves, clearing the old dead growth off the vegetable garden and planting seeds and new color for the summer months ahead. Spring can also be a really rainy season, driving people indoors.  You can make the bes ..read more

What’s better than a quick do-it-yourself fix for a broken garbage disposal? Not to have a broken disposal in the first place.    I never really miss a garbage disposal when I have one.  It is only when my sink gets clogged and nothing will go down when I realize the importance of a working disposal.  A good disposal helps keep the sink free of clogs when little bits of food fall off plates, into the sink, and down the drain.  A good disposal will work, on average, for 8-15 years.  A good disposal can cost between $200-$1000 to buy new and install.  So, if ..read more

Did you know that one of the most common plumbing problems is a clogged drain?   A clogged drain can cost a pretty penny to fix if you call a plumber.  On average a clogged sink costs between $125-$300 to snake.  In addition, some plumbers charge an initial fee just to get in their truck ($100-$150) and then an hourly wage after that ($45-$65).  Let’s not forget that if your clog happens over a weekend or on a holiday, an additional emergency or inconvenience fee can be added to the total cost as well . You might not have to foot that bill, though.   If the clog isn ..read more
