I will start this blog off with a disclaimer that in no way am I bragging about anything at all. I am only saying that it all simply worked well this week.
I
LOVED
MY
TIME
WITH
ELIZABETH
There, I said it.
And for those who have ready any and all of my posts, you know that we have had our fair share of challenges in the 25+ years that she and I have been on this journey together. Her Sensory Processing Disorder ( SPD) and Global Dyspraxia have been challenging since birth. Sometimes one beats out the other for the forefront of concern, but trust me, one of them is there and present most days.

We are working our way into another conference night…the last one of the year. It is a big one because what is talked about here and how the goals are being met sort of set the stage for the IEP meeting and goals for the following school year. So, any concerns you have, goals you wish were achieved or changes you desire are all points to cover.
The way that the school calendar works, in my opinion, is that by the time you get to February, the year is pretty much done. This is in terms of big changes that you might request for your child. Such as testing to be done, an IEP meeting to review and ..read more

So it is official, we are celebrating the one-year anniversary of Elizabeth beginning vision therapy.
I think because we started this therapy a bit late in her life, we are truly old hands at doing pretty good follow up at home, so even though it has been a year, we have actually only gone for adjustments around each month and a half. And we just did the work when we wanted.
I told everyone that Elizabeth loves doing this therapy and that still holds true. She absolutely never, not ONCE has said no to therapy time or even the slightest hesitation to do it. I have not been able to make this sta ..read more

I don’t know how you feel about it but I for one was somewhat stunned when I got the call from the school about conference night. It is coming up in mid October for our school system. The call went on to say how to schedule and that there were in person and virtual options available.
I think two things come to mind to me as I got this call and they are:
If you get so caught up in life and doing all that needs done in your days, you can run the very real risk of not keeping an eye on the calendar for notable dates like conference night
Those who have a child with special needs, can find the ef ..read more

And why do you ask is that? Well, it has to do with the fact that she is “getting her life back” For those who haven’t been reading my recent blogs, I will tell you.
She has been on a bit of a hiatus from her one job because the schools she does her gym classes with takes a break between summer sessions and fall.
This translated to A LOT of time on Elizabeth’s hands for about 4 weeks.
And yes! we did have her other job and most but not all of her other activities in her days, but I have to say that for some reason this year this break hit her hard.
I am not sure if she it has to do with the en ..read more

Yes, I understand. The code word is…………
Yes, We did put the code in but my daughter put in the code for our old security system, not this current one.
Yes, we are all fine.
This is a small excerpt from my actual conversation with the nice policeman at 8:15 am this past Saturday morning.
Three guesses who this conversation was about?
And it all started with Elizabeth heading out to the garage to get an iced tea from the refrigerator out there. Which typically doesn’t usually require disarming the security system but because it was early in the morning, it did.
And so began the fun of the mornin ..read more

With the impending school year, I can almost feel the anxiety we would have as Elizabeth got ready for a new school year, another teacher and hopefully another year to be “understood”
Each year in the Fall, I would write a letter to the school telling them everything that she had done, learned or struggled with in the summer. I told them all about the things she liked, didn’t like and anything new that I thought would help everyone see the complete picture of who Elizabeth was.
NOT who she is related to the label of her disorders.
But who she IS!
The sum of all the parts. The sum of all the th ..read more

If you have a child that is in school, you are probably enjoying summer break.
And probably watching the days on the calendar move closer to “school range”
I know that we did a double take on our calendar to see that my son starts school in one month!!!!
For those who have a child with special needs, the transition to a new school year means even more feelings and even more work.
I hope help those just starting on the road with the schools and those who have to maybe take a deep breath as they think of another year with the schools! The pandemic’s effects on the school are vast ..read more
