Development Co-ordination Disorder - Dyspraxia

I thought it was time that the website I made for Dyspraxia had a new blog. I haven’t had the time to update it very often. But I’ve been inspired this week by a wonderful piece of documentary making by a young producer named Xanthe Palmer. Dyspraxia is like a disconnect between your brain and your body when it feels like your entire body is acting out against you. That’s as heard in the recent BBC Radio programme, “My Dyspraxic Life”. So much of that documentary resonates with me so well. Dyspraxia is estimated to affect more than 3 million people in the UK, 1.4 million severely. It is a comp ..read more

At some point I’ll rewrite this blog I’m linking to for this website, but right now I don’t have the time. So please head on over to this blog I made back in 2016 about the importance of having patience and understanding for people who have Dyspraxia. Welcome. This will be yet another iteration of this particular blog entry in aid of this year’s Dyspraxia Awareness Week. It’s day 2 and I thought since it’s had positive feedback in the past I thought I’d use it to finally kick off this website as it has gotten me positive feedback in the past. I’ve tried to get a Dyspraxia blog going before and I’ll be doing so again here in this dedicated website for Dyspraxia. You see, I’m also a web designer and I designed this website in WordPress with my own custom WordPress theme. Another website for Dyspraxia awareness cannot be a bad thing! What is ..read more

What is Dyspraxia – A Short Commentary

What is Dyspraxia? Is it a disability? or a learning difficulty? Or is it both? The first thing to say here is that as we all know is that disability neither has to be physical nor visible. But when it comes to Dyspraxia it exists with other neurodiverse conditions and other disabilities – and it does not affect intelligence. But I’m looking at my card as purchased from Dyspraxia Magazine right now and it says quite clearly “Hidden Disability”. And yet I have always shied away from describing myself as a disabled person. The word seems, wrongly synonymous with the use of a wheelchair or the us ..read more

Follow up: Use of language about Dyspraxia

Good afternoon, Thanks again for reading my blog. I posted a new blog the other day based on an experience I had on the phone earlier this week. About how I don’t often “do” phone calls because of what goes on in my mind; namely the struggles with organising my thoughts and my speech. I posted the blog to a group and as I hoped, I got some feedback on it. This led to another discussion about my use of language with regard to “suffering with” Dyspraxia. I got a bit of a telling-off about using language that is disempowering for people who have Dyspraxia. But I didn’t use that in my blog. It’s o ..read more

After a phone conversation, I just want to put this on here to gather my thoughts. So I can mention it and try to put it behind me. I don’t often do phone calls. Every time I do, I’m left with the same feelings of inadequacy. No matter how much mental preparation I do for them. This could be talking with a friend, or it could be talking to someone on a company phone line. (I prefer online chat) My problem is, I plan, I talk and when I talk my brain is already searching for the next thing to say and I’m never even sure if I’m making sense to myself. It’s all to do with the organisation of speec ..read more

When Dyspraxia Fails Me

I have known for a long time that I am different from most other people. But I haven’t always known why and how to cope with it. A long time ago now, when I was still a small child, at Infant school I would be taken aside from the rest of the class for extra reading or other curricular things. This wasn’t a punishment or a sideline for being disruptive but something that I take to be a measure from a supportive infant school of a child on a statement of special educational needs. (SEN) The reading topic was Humpty Dumpty. My helper, Miss Jones was her name) would read a line to prompt me, whic ..read more

As a Dyspraxic, my working life can be tremendously challenging.   I forget things easily; I struggle to prioritise tasks and I generally lose my way in the hive of activity that is my brain. Which of course doesn’t mean that I’m incapable of doing the work, but as is written on a laminated keyring card that I have in front of me on my desk, “I need time to work things out in my own way”. And this is exactly what I do. So what I wanted to do in this short blog is to share some things that really help me do my day to day work.  It might seem trivial to a lot of people but for me ..read more
