I am a New Testament nerd who loves studying Scripture. I'm also a theologian, dad, husband, and hockey fan (not in order of importance, of course!). I also served in full-time pastoral ministry for almost four years. For me, a scholarship is ultimately an act of worship and service to the church, and the goal of such scholarship is for the empowerment of the church universal. So let's..

Assurance, security, or something more ... apocalyptic? In this video I tackle Paul's beautiful and complex view of God's activity and human agency in Romans 8:31-39. God's holiness is at the center of all that he does, and Paul's vision captures both the trials of life and the need for faithful allegiance to King Jesus. Translation: 8:31 What, therefore, will we say about such things? If God is for us, who is against us? 8:32 He who did not spare his own son but handed him over for all of us, how will he not also with him graciously bestow to us all things? 8:33 Who will bring a charge agains ..read more

I am delighted to welcome my friend Rev. Dr. Dan Morrison to NTT! In this wide-ranging video, we talk a lot about racism, theology, the church, justice, righteousness, and the character of God. Dan holds a PhD in New Testament from McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I hope we are all challenged to think and reflect further on what John the Seer says and how justice is a mighty force for good in our world.

Well, I don't quite make it in five minutes, but I kept it under ten. The Apocalyptic Paul is probably the hottest thing on the theology market (at least in scholarship) and there is a direct need for a succinct and informed explanation. I hope you dig it!

Romans is perhaps Paul's most widely read epistle. Romans, as a document, is a fascinating glimpse into the early Christian proclamation and to the life and issues within that early community. In this video we go over some of the hermeneutical and cultural ideas for this study of Romans, and I end it with book corner!

Time to think biblically. Pastor Mike Winger answered a question on mutual submission in Ephesians 5, and his answer deserves a response. I think, respectfully, Mike demonstrates a lack of education and graciousness in his answer toward biblical egalitarians. Let me know what you think.
I give my own answer plus a very brief overview of Ephesians 5 from my own perspective, just to demonstrate Mike's numerous inaccuracies in his handling of the text.

Did Origen affirm the ministry of women? Were early church father's purely patriarchal, or vivid defenders of the equality of women? The answer, like all human beings and their biases and beauties, is more complex.
Origen of Alexandria is an important church father and he wrote a lot about the Bible. In this video, I briefly and clearly break down his analysis of Phoebe in Romans ch.16.1-2 (Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans 10.17). What he wrote is interesting to say the least!

During an AMA, I asked Alisa Childers and Frank Turek a question about women and sexism in Christianity. I've included their response and my own reflection and rejoinder to their comments. I think, overall, I don't disagree with their broader points but their use of "role" language caused me to reflect a lot on the nature of such language within the complementarian-egalitarian debate in evangelicalism.
