Naoki Matcha saw how matcha experienced a popularity boom (and subsequently an increase in lower quality matcha coming to market) and sought to fix that by offering a versatile and cost-effective matcha series that allowed the consumer to enjoy matcha in traditional and non-traditional ways while sharing the knowledge they have accumulated so far. Another difference is the way that they source their matcha, working with a network of tea estates instead of just a few single ones. This allows them to change based on feedback from consumers. I have worked with Naoki Matcha before and bought ..read more

Hello – it’s me again (I hope you didn’t forget me in my small leave of absence)! Many life events are occurring at the moment, but I am trying to slowly but surely bring tea back into daily practice. To do that, I thought….why not start with Matcha Monday? Bonsai Cha specializes in selling matcha straight from the source, founded by mother/daughter duo Donna and Avery. Avery had the opportunity to relocate to Fukuoka, Japan, and there she found an absolute love of Matcha. After Donna visited Avery, she was introduced to the same amazing matcha in Kyoto – and they knew they needed to bring it ..read more

Marketing with Matcha | How Companies Can Trick You!

The other day, I saw a few matcha’s on my newsfeed and immediately, they just felt off. Looking further at the company, the matcha did not seem to be high-quality even though it was marketed as Organic, high-quality matcha (note they did not say ceremonial and cue eye-roll at organic – we know my thoughts on this). Whether this company does or does not alter their matcha pictures to make them more appealing – as a tea blogger, I can understand the want to make your product/pictures seem as appealing as possible. Editing is a powerful tool. Just look below at this matcha that is more yellow and ..read more

When looking at matcha, there is definitely a lot of different options available on the market. It surged in popularity in 2015 and increased the number of tea shops offering matcha. However, being highly unregulated, ceremonial or culinary standard matcha became blurred in some companies. Naoki Matcha saw how matcha experienced a popularity boom and sought to fix that by offering a versatile and cost-effective matcha series that allowed the consumer to enjoy matcha in traditional and non-traditional ways while sharing the knowledge they have accumulated so far. Botanik Herbs & Tea is a tea company from Davis, California that currently specializes in providing ceremonial, single origin matcha from Shizuoka, Japan (but I believe they will be expanding their collection beyond just matcha). They are trying to push a new way of tea culture that centers itself around quality, health consciousness, and sustainability. They send me their matcha to give my feedback on, here is what I thought: Ceremonial, Single Grade Matcha I find myself consuming matcha when I need something a bit stronger than black tea. With just a small amount, matcha grants me clarit ..read more

This matcha challenged me. Through my tea journey, I hadn’t yet reviewed food grade matcha. So this experience with Andela Tea challenged me to figure out the best way to use and report back on the matcha, while testing out multiple ways. Andela Tea is a matcha company specializing in (you guessed it) matcha! They have food-grade matcha as well as some self care products as well. They sent me their matcha to experiment with, here are my thoughts: Cooking with Matcha Green Tea I tried multiple times to cook with this matcha. The first one, a matcha cake, did not turn out well (on my end, not th ..read more

What is Matcha? | The Tools

I used to believe that I could not truly enjoy matcha because I did not have the proper tools to make matcha. I would whip it up in a cereal bowl with an electric frother, and while it was not the best, it worked enough. Much like with Chai that I believed I needed to have the “right” ingredients to properly make chai, I believed that I really could not properly experience matcha without the right tools. This is obviously not true, but recently this memory has me thinking about the tools involved in making matcha. After my deep dive into the Origin of Matcha, here is my research on the tools b ..read more

What is Matcha? | The Origin

For the month of March, my focus is going to be totally on matcha! I am going to be going through the origin, matcha tools, ceremonial vs food grade, and the culture/ceremony behind matcha. For today, I am focusing on the history of matcha. As with any popular drink, history can often be hard to track down and really dissect. If you look up the origin of matcha, a million URLs with the word “matcha” in the name come up, all with a slightly different variation of how matcha originated. The total history was actually quite difficult to track down, and put in order! But here is what I found! Orig ..read more

Enso Matcha is a UK-based matcha company that focuses on wellbeing and inspiring others to live a happy and healthy life. Matcha helps people’s mood, energy, and ability to focus, and can lead to many more benefits for the consumer. They specialize in artisanal Japanese matcha all coming from Uji, Kyoto, and offer Ceremonial grade and everyday matcha. They reached out to me to try their Ceremonial Grade Matcha; here are my thoughts: Ceremonial Grade Matcha: The first thought that came to mind when making this matcha, was the beautiful green color.
