Dirtbags and Culture Killers
Iron Horse Brewery Blog

This week we bring people from all parts of our Iron Horse community, including our hockey team, to put on The Dirtbag Carnival here at the brewery. Like all of our large events it hasn’t happened in awhile which presents an opportunity to reinvent this tradition. What hasn’t changed is the collaborative needs of an event on this scale. These large events only work when each person involved helps shape the way it’s being built from the ground up. One dubious contribution from an equally dubious contributor are hats made from some brewery packaging materials to crown King and Queen Dirtbag of ..read more

Birth of a Beer

Iron Horse Brewery looks a lot different than it did PreCovid times. We bought a cidery, decided to totally botch the acquisition and management, shut it down and start a cidery basically from scratch. One of the dumber and most expensive ways to approach opening a cidery.  Yet we persist and are now joyously and frustratingly making Cider variants under the new Oddstock label. Our other bigger change is we moved away from using third parties for our marketing, branding, and design work and have brought a huge portion of that work back to where it all started, in the heart of the brewery ..read more

It’s time to flocculate
Iron Horse Brewery Blog

I am super green to the beer world and the world of IHB, but my cousins have welcomed all of my questions about the fermentation process no matter how basic they are. So when our boss-hole Greg used the word flocculate casually in a conversation like everyone knew what it meant I had to interrupt him and ask for the definition. It morphed into a conversation about yeast pitch rate, population growth, and how many generations the yeast continues to keep its potency. /The main takeaway for me was the word and activity of flocculating. Flocculate doesn’t just happen in brewing but its activity d ..read more

Lo-Co Collab and Eastern Washington Brewfest

Unity in Community is what comes to mind when I think of collaboration. Iron Horse Brewery is one of 4 breweries in small town Ellensburg and it can sometimes get people worked up about which brewery is their favorite and create rivalries and pride in their brewery of choice like we are the Vikings vs. the Packers, without the cheese headgear or the face paint. What we find funny about that is Indie brewers are more likely to toast each other’s efforts rather than roast them. So it was no surprise to us when Greg proposed the idea of Battle of the Brewers, it seemed like the perfect chance to ..read more

18 of Our Favorite Memories From [the pub] Told By Past & Present Cousins
Iron Horse Brewery Blog
by Adam Ransavage

The goal of our pub has always been to be a community gathering space with great beer.  We’ve strived to create an atmosphere where friends, neighbors, and people driving through Ellensburg that need a bathroom stop could all gather in comfortable harmony.  With a simplistic and open space, people could meet and focus on company and enjoy a beer together.  We’re proud that the 412 N Main location was a space that served everyone from our mug clubbers and regulars stopping by after work, to weekly trivia brainiacs, to community pint nights, to 1,000 athletes participating in our ..read more

Are We a Beveragery, Now?

If covid-19 has taught us anything it’s that you never know what’s going to happen AND that we should have invested in the face mask industry when we had the chance back in 2019.  Oh, Hindsight!   Well, learning from that painful lesson, we took the opportunity to engage in conversation with our friends at Bad Granny Cider company.  A conversation turned into a date, which turned into meeting the parents, which eventually led to having granny over at our house for supper; we loved it so much we asked her to move in.    There is probably a much better way to say ..read more

Perserverence Pays Plenty A not so brief outline of how long it took and the experiences I had in passing the Advanced Cicerone® exam. Fair warning: there will be F bombs. The supporting actors in this story are: My fabulous husband  who is the best ever in all aspects, Tyson (who lent multiple ears, shoulders, guidance, and support), and some wonderful friends, family, and beers. Cicerone.org Announces New Level the Advanced Cicerone®. I tell my husband I think I want to do that, since the Master seems too extreme for my needs, but Certified doesn’t seem like quite ..read more

Every now and then I receive an email that I feel must be shared with the world. A fan of Irish Death and pastry chef extraordinaire, Heidi Shannon, sent such an email. And by email, I mean an image of these super delicious looking Irish Death Cupcakes. Immediately, I asked if she would be willing to share this recipe with the broader world. Fortunately, for all of us, she obliged. Since St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and you might be looking for a dessert to complement these recipes, now seemed like the perfect time to inspire your pastry chef goals, with these Irish Death Cho ..read more

Cooking with Beer, Thanksgiving Edition

A note from the robots who post content on here Mostly because we’ve never been any good at imagining anything as-is, we wanted to reimagine Thanksgiving as a flighted dinner of traditional dishes, paired with our beers. But, we have an Advanced Cicerone ® in our ranks, so not only can we provide such inspiration straight from our own food and beverage enthusiasm and experimentation, we (Rikki) banged out super helpful, scientifically backed tips for the occasion. According to the IHB Slack: Greg once brined a turkey using our beer Devin suggests leftover turkey sandwiches and Mid-Light Cri ..read more

Remember all of those posts about [the new pub on pearl], [ the bark ], and [ the shed ]?    Neither do we. We got tired of putting our feet directly in our mouths, so we took a different path with this newest project. The beer park is still getting explored, but in the meantime, we knew we HAD TO FIND A WAY TO HAVE PINTS WITH OUR FRIENDS AGAIN.   Does that come across as shouting?  It does a little. As of two days ago, we have the permits we need to begin demolition of the space formerly known as the downstairs offices at iron horse brewery so that we can turn it i ..read more
