Hello all! We have a 23 month old standard poodle. He’s a sweetie. Unfortunately we live in a condo and the only exercise he gets is a total of 60+ min walks and lots of playing and training in doors. Despite all of this, as well as taking him to daycare once a week, or going to sniff spots 1-2x a week, he is still pretty easily stimulated by other large dogs or water.
Today he pulled a little hard going after some creek he saw. I had gone about 2 months before a triggering event. But this is probably the 3rd time he’s pulled so hard since we’ve owned him where I’ve gotten sore after walking ..read more

Hi all! I am looking into potentially buying a poodle as a first time pet owner/ owner training a service dog prospect.
I just want to hear from poodle owners, what is your dog like?
Temperament? Trainability? Anxiousness? Activities you do?
I’d just like to know as much as I can from owners and breeders about this beautiful dog! Thank you!
(Also if anyone knows any reputable standard poodle breeders in the DMV and surrounding areas, please share!)

hi. I will start off by saying that I have severe OCD and anxiety. A lot of it revolves around my dog’s health. so sometimes I cannot tell if I am being rational or irrational, or if my concerns are valid or not valid.
on Saturday, I adopted a 1 year old black purebred standard poodle. he had blood work done before coming to me and it was perfect. I love him to death.
however, I noticed symptoms very easily in dogs. I am hyper aware of everything. The most notable thing to me has been that he is panting A LOT. When I say a lot, I mean even in his sleep. Like mouth open and everything. His bre ..read more

Does anyone else’s spoo seem to eat dirt sometimes? Intuitively it feels like a dog would do this if she is deficient in some minerals but mine eats a pretty good dog food.

Devastated. 7 month old standard poodle, Lily, diagnosed with IMHA today.
First signs yesterday morning: very lethargic, would not eat, fever. Vet mentioned yellowing and eyes and heart murmur. X-rays revealed an enlarged spleen. Vet does not think anything was ingested.
Her red blood cell count was low yesterday (confirming numbers) and did not improve overnight/today. She is starting her first transfusion and we are awaiting an update. My understanding is that we want to see her red blood cell count improve after the transfusion and beyond.
Has anyone experienced this in such a young dog? W ..read more

I just adopted a 1 year old black purebred standard poodle. He’s an amazing and well-behaved dog. However, his genetics are likely not the best. He was being fed lamb & brown rice food when I got him but I don’t have that brand near me and wanted to switch him to Hill’s Science Diet Chicken food.
Here’s what I’ve been noticing:
he is very gassy (and it’s smelly)
he’s itching his ears a lot and they smell kinda funky
he’s biting his paws on occassion
he is biting at his butt/tail a lot. i think his anal glands need to be expressed. so i’m gonna have the vet do that.
his stools ar ..read more

First time standard owner here. I’ve owned minis and toys my whole life. I picked up my dog a few days ago. He’s 1 year old. I got him older because he was in an intensive service dog training program. He’s my service dog. He has long lips and some loose neck skin too. Doesn’t bother me, I just want to make sure it’s not a potential health issue… and that it’s normal. Pics below

We have taken her to the vet multiple times, have been given medicated ear rinses, as well as Otic Suspension for dogs, as well as allergy shots. Sometimes when its bad she will shake her head and let out a yelp. Any advice would be amazing!
