John M. Marzo MD; Department of Orthopaedics; General Orthopaedics; Sports Medicine; Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo; 2018 When I moved to Buffalo in 2016, I discovered a gem.  I am part of the UBMD practice and we are aligned with the University at Buffalo.  The University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine had recently moved into its Downtown Buffalo campus when I first started working here in 2016.  The campus houses a state of the art, arthroscopy, situation and cadaver laboratory space that would serve a training ground for n ..read more

Dear Josh, So let’s pretend that you REALLY did want to join us at the Darwin Martin House for National Shoulder and Elbow Week on May 17.   There’s still this tiny little elephant in the room. You know, your appearance fee?  I understand it runs between 125k and 200k.  Geesh. Well, here’s the thing. We kind of  have a salary cap of our own and I am not sure we can stay under the cap with that number.  Before you walk away, please hear me out for a second. You see, we are a nonprofit. All this money is getting pumped back into educating the shoulder and elbow d ..read more

Dear Josh, Hi, I’m Dr. Matthew DiPaola.  You might know a few of my partners at UBMD Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.  They are a fantastic group of docs and help take care of your team.  Anyhow, I’m throwing this party to raise money for shoulder and elbow research and education at the Darwin Martin House on May 17th and you’re invited. As you know elbow problems can be pretty tricky.  All the proceeds from the party go toward finding better treatments for tricky shoulder and elbow problems.  It will be a relatively small affair.  We are hoping to pull in around ..read more

Why Architecture is the Perfect Theme for our. National Shoulder and Elbow Week event in Buffalo. You could argue that architecture is what happens when art and engineering collide.  You might be able to say the same thing for shoulder and elbow surgery.  As shoulder and elbow surgeons we “reconstruct” joints, “restore” anatomy and use CT scans to better understand the “architecture” of the shoulder socket or elbow joint.  Even the vocabulary is similar.  Below are a few examples of where the shoulder and elbow world intersect with the world of architecture and building. In Buffalo this time of year we start to get the itch. It’s still a bit chilly out there (ok we had snow last week) and Spring is not quite in full bloom. We are itching to get outside and see new buds on the trees and life awakening once again. When in bloom, the wisteria vine has gorgeous almost iridescent lavender and purple hued blossoms that cascade every Spring. While we can’t be certain, we are hopeful that the wisteria bloom will correspond with our event so that we will be able to enjoy this beautiful spectacle. Register today for our event in anticipation of the wisteria bloom B ..read more

One Weird Hit

When I interviewed for medical school at Cornell where I eventually matriculated, I interviewed with Lloyd Gayle MD a prominent plastic surgeon. At the time I knew I wanted to do some form of surgery but wasn’t committed to any one field.  He mentioned that as an ex-football player I’d likely fit right in to orthopedics.  I was humbled at that time that he thought of me as anything more than a guy in a cheap suit, but as it turns out I guess he was right. It seems we often gravitate to the fields that impact us the most.  While I was lucky enough to evade major injury in my foot ..read more

Let’s face it, unless you are in the medical field…scratch that, unless you are in the orthopedic field you have probably never heard of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES).  I know I hadn’t heard of ASES until I got interested in shoulder and elbow surgery.  But now that you have heard of them, I am going to give you a brief introduction to the ASES and why it may matter to you. The ASES is a small but dedicated organization whose mission it is to promote excellence in shoulder and elbow care.  Its members are some of the best and brightest shoulder and elbow doctor ..read more
