4th & Broadway BRCD 290 320 RE-UP! Originally posted by Mickey P 13/07/2008 Mick says: After the hype, the success and the mistake, Don-E slipped away to produce his sophomore set. His return was greeted with a lot less fuss, many people have likely not heard of Changing Seasons, the album was certainly nowhere near as successful as Unbreakable.  This was, I believe, the first single released before the album was released (but don't quote me) and Dodge from Dodge City Productions was called in for remix duty. The Soul Inside Mix gives a different slant to what is already a ..read more

Don-E - Peace In The World - UK CDS - (1992)

4th & Broadway – BRCD 256, 4th & Broadway – 864 091-2 I won't waste any time covering who Don-E is or what he means to me or the wider UK soul scene as that good stuff can all be found on previous write-ups by myself or Mick elsewhere on this blog. Peace In The World is a beautiful, summery track and there isn't a bad version here. The Urban Mix and Badboy Submix are my favourites, although if pushed, I'd probably go for the slightly more basic Badboy Submix. It's largely, vocals, beats and bassline, with minimal extra instrumentation, and song song really shines through (and ..read more

Don-E - Oh My Gosh - UK CDS - (1992)

4th & Broadway – BRCD 260, PolyGram – 864 829-2 Don-E has been well documented on here so I'll keep this relatively short. As many of you know, he is a true UK icon and should be regarded alongside Omar as one of our greatest. As far as I know, Oh My Gosh was Don-E's first release, so maybe I should've posted this first? :) While it isn't his best ever work, it is a confident, nicely done mid-tempo slow-jam and is well worth having in your collection. All the mixes are decent but I think the Original 7" and stripped back Thunderstorm Mix , which really le ..read more

Mac Band Featuring The McCampbell Brothers ‎– Roses Are Red - Euro Mini CDS - (1988)

MCA Records ‎– 257 859-2 Secind birthday post of the day and it is a straight classic. "Roses Are Red" is a 1988 single by The Mac Band featuring The McCampbell Brothers, and produced by the legendary LA and Babyface. The Mac Band WERE the McCampbell brothers, so it's a slightly odd name? This was their most successful of six chart singles on the US Billboard Hot Black Singles chart, peaking at number one for one week on that chart. "Roses Are Red" did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. In a weird twist of fate, it fared better this side of the big pond, where it hit #8 on the UK Singles ..read more

Virgin ‎– VSCDT1274, Virgin ‎– VSCDT 1274 Wow! I'd put money on the fact that I'd already posted this a couple of years ago or more? It seems not. What an oversight! Still, what better day to correct that than on my birthday, right? An absolute BANGER from 1990 courtesy of William Orbit, which relies heavily on a Harry J All-Stars Liquidator (love that track) sample. This one is a UK urban classic so don't waste any more time reading my bollocks and go download it while it is still hot. Now the best version of this track was always the Lisa Loud Mix, criminally overlooked in favou ..read more

Atlantic ‎– 7 81830-2, Atlantic ‎– 81830-2 This one takes me back! I was barely into double digits in age when I first heard it. The Levert brothers are the sons of The O'Jays' founder and lead-singer Eddie Levert, and as a result, are something approaching R&B royalty. They released their debut album in 1985  Gerald Levert was a Soul singer born in July 1966; Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. and died 10 November 2006 autopsy report concluded accidental overdose of prescription narcotics and over-the-counter drugs and pneumonia; Newbury, Ohio Son  Sean Levert was born Septembe ..read more

Don-E - Crazy - (1993)

4th & Broadway – BRCD 272 The multi-talented Don-E found initial success, both here and stateside with the brilliant Love Makes The World Go Round, and associated album Unbreakable, back in 1992, which got to 18 on the UK charts. His second album, 1995's Changing Seasons, didn't quite live up to the hype of the first and he parted company with the label, retreating into producing for others rather than being an artist himself. During this time he signed to D'Angelo's label, which is quite the honour! Between these two albums he dropped the single 'Crazy' (or 'Craz-E' as shown on the ..read more

Big up fam. Just wanted to apologise for my extended absence from the blog (again). I'll save you the details but I had some tough times to get through.  Thank you for your patience. I've got several posts lined up and still have a fair few heavy cuts to drop (and I will double-drop again on my birthday in may) - but I would still very much like some co-posters to help keep this place alive. As far as I know, this is one of the only places you can get some of these rare releases and as such it would be a shame if it died. Even if you could only post one or two tracks a month it w ..read more
