Stainless steel for a work surface

I'm going to make a kitchen work surface from 5mm laser cut stainless steel. I know very little about metals but I've read that 316 is more corrosion resistant than 304. However, the quotes I've been getting here in the UK are far cheaper for 304 (~£450/sqm) than 316 (~£900/sqm). Do I really need 316 or will 304 be fine ..read more

As a mate of mine says, you get 100% of what you don't ask for. It is taking me a while to get used to this concept. I am SE QLD based and am wanting to get into the bottomless pit of hand scraping. I have a granite surface plate and things to scrape. I am happy for postage deal with right person. I will most likely be getting a sandvik scraper or one that a bloke called Anderson are selling after Easter. If anyone here is getting out of scraping or knows someone who is giving it up, I would love to buy some/all of their gear. The top of my list is as follows but I am sure there are things ..read more

Making a Wormgear with a Screw Tap (Free Hobbing) A Design & Manufacturing Guide

I was pondering a few things and contemplating worm gears for minute rotational adjustments, not for power transmission - that's quit a rabbit hole and they are predictably expensive Anyway I came across this video for cutting a worm gear of sorts which employs thread cutting taps - just perfect for what I had in mind - really good video also with heaps of information https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhQMwFRbpXE ..read more

Herbert B drill press restoration problem

Hi, this is my first post so I guess is my introduction to the group. I love old heavy machinery especially waldown drills but this post is to ask your assistance with a problem I'm having with a Herbert B drill restoration. The B is a tiny high speed drill and mine is the 18000 rpm variant with a single phase motor and a albrect keyless chuck with a maximum opening of 3mm. This tiny capacity drill still weighs about 20kg and is an awesome bit of vintage engineering. I found some old posts on this forum about other restorations of this model which was why I joined. So, to my problem. I'm an el ..read more

Nifty thread cutting technique

I thought it was going to be something complex or complicated - the DOC is pretty impressive by itself https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCDP6SFB2Io Just doing the math on this and for those with more discrete dials, perhaps metric, and smaller machines taking less material per pass setting a ratio of 10:5.6 or 100:56 on infeed versus compound feed yields 29.24 degrees. So if I was taking 0.25mm cuts I'd advance the compound 0.14 - it also makes it easier as my compound leadscrew has a lot of free play as it is currently, I'd only need to be advancing it, not in and back out, then back in with ..read more

The gauge you probably never realised that you wanted/needed

Bit if a haul with some of the footage running a bit long, however the end result is superb. Especially noteworthy is the simpler 3D printed version at the end - I'm thinking longer rods and you've got something that could also measure between straight edges also in sizes that are over what your typical verniers cover and likely with more accuracy. There's real potential here... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdJkZcyDQ4A ..read more

I am a total newbie with this type of thing but what I am trying to achieve is a way of either engraving and/or etching small alloy and stainless plates for branding. And of course itll come in handy for other things as well. So being a tight that I am, I will be entering this world at the bottom end of the market!! Its not high volume stuff, its just hobby work really. What are peoples thoughts on something like this?? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004891726126.html Again, I do not know a lot about this type of thing but the way I read it, this unit appears to be able to etch stainl ..read more
