Hey all, It’s been a while since I’ve been active on these forums so I hope everyone is doing well. Truth is, I haven’t really been smoking much these days (cigars or pipes). But, I recently discovered that my grandfather ran a local pipe shop - Vottis Pipe Shop in Amsterdam, NY. I inherited a piece of briarwood from him and I’d like to get it made into a usable pipe. I think it would be a nice tribute to him. So my question is this: does anyone active on these forums make pipes or does... Independent pipe makers ..read more

Screens, Balls or Cones for M M Cobs

Not sure how many of you smoke cobs but I find with M M just shoving the stem into the bowl a lot of tobacco isn't properly burned. The draw also clogs more often then with briars' typically side drilled draw holes. I would think screen "balls" take up a lot of space in these small bowls so do you have a preference between flat and tapered screens? Do they improve the burn, or are they just annoying to use ..read more

Long term storage

The wine cooler I used to store my pipe tobacco gave up the ghost this am so I had to move everything into my frigeradores (sp) with my cigars. I've noticed some interesting pipe tobacco aromas in the unit so I'm thinking mason jars with new lids hand tightened might not be the best seal. Any recommendations? I can purchase a cheap sealer that attaches to my foodsaver for under $20. Is a little vacuum to tighten the lids the best option or as some have suggested a dip in Paraffin wax... Homemade Leather Pipe Stands

I have a bunch of pipes that don’t fit easily into standard pipe racks, so I wanted to pick up a bunch of leather loop-style stands. They’re around $10 each for cheap ones, up to $25 for fancier ones. I just needed something to keep the pipes organized on a shelf above my work bench, nothing really for display purposes. I repurposed an old leather belt, cut it up to desired length and width, punched holes with nail sets and fastened the ends with screws and nuts. These 6 literally cost... I'd liike to display my tins and mason jars in a cabinet in my office, seldom above 78 degrees. The tins are sealed with waxed tape. Will that be acceptable for long term or should I store at 64 degrees with cigars ..read more

Pipe rests

In my never ending quest to make use of all the crap I've collected over the years I made these from stuff getting dusty in the shop a piece of spanish cedar - the holes are rough drilled then shaped to fit the pipe with a wood chisel and sanded with a dremel. The two exposed positions are to be finished as I receive the pipes from an old belt I outgrew years... Pipe rests ..read more
