I am doing my taxes and although I have good interest with Wealthsimple and other moneymarket accounts I am getting killed on taxes. Where are people parking money, and what return does it pay, that is more tax efficient. e.g, return on capital vs interest or other schemes Statistics: Posted by lexar123 — Mar 27th, 2024 4:32 pm ..read more

What to do with non-qualified stocks in RRSP Account (Questrade)?

I have two stocks which are now designated as non-qualified investment. I got an email from Questrade last year but I noticed this just now. The email also says that CRA will impose a 50% tax on the book value or FMV of the investment at the time it became unqualified. These are IRONNET INC (100 @40$) and SESN BIO stocks. Since the email was from last year (Sep), will I be required to pay this tax to CRA? Should I inform my accountant about it? The current value of these stocks is 0. Can I move these to my margin account and claim a loss in my margin account for 2024 year tax? Statistics: Po ..read more

Economic Productivity and Future Returns

Recently the Senior Deputy Governor for the Bank of Canada gave a speech highlighting the continual decline in Canadian productivity, especially relative to the US. “Back in 1984, the Canadian economy was producing 88 per cent of the value generated by the US economy per hour,” Ms. Rogers said. “That’s not great. But by 2022, Canadian productivity had fallen to just 71 per cent of that of the United States. Over this same period of time, Canada also fell behind our G7 peers, with only Italy seeing a larger decline in productivity relative to the United States.”... Weak productivity is not o ..read more

I have not converted to USD in a while, but I invest on RBC DI and just looked at the rate for transferring CAD into USD and the Exchange it quoted was 1.3655; current spot is 1.36. Is the Norbert's Gambit no longer worth the hassle as the investment firms have tightened up the spread or is the commission charged separately? I think I over contributed RRSP

So, I think I confused myself. Basically, on my NOA 2022, I have the following under my RRSP RRSP deduction limit for 2023: 15000 Minus: Unused RRSP contributions previously reported and available to deduct for 2023: 11000 Available contribution room for 2023: 4000 Because GenuTax and StudioTax kept referring as "RRSP deduction limit for 2023" I basically went word by word for the 15000. But I assume because I didn't use 11000 in 2022, and I can use it this year, that means I should've only contributed 4000, not 15000. Is this correct? if so, and I did contributed 15000 in feb, how can I ..read more

Update - day trading in TFSA vs. RRSP

There is a lot of confusing and incorrect information out there on the topic of day trading, or frequent trading, in an RRSP or TFSA. The test the CRA uses isn't whether you are "day trading," but rather, whether you are running a business in your registered account. The CRA uses factors, on a case-by-case basis, to decide whether you are running a business in your registered account. These factors include: intention to resell at a higher profit, knowledge of securities markets, time spent researching markets, frequency of trades, duration of holding period, whether your ordinary business is ..read more
