A fat quarter is one of my favorite pre cuts.  I find them a fun way to add to my stash.   These 18″ x 22″ cuts of fabric are pretty and fun to collect.  Plus there are so many ways to use a fat quarter. Did you know you can get 99- 2″ squares, 56- 2 1/2″ squares,  30- 3 1/2″ squares, 16- 4 1/2″ squares, and 12- 5″ charm squares.    Squares are great for scrap quilting.  Use them to make four patches, nine patches, 16 patches and more.  I recently cut a stack of fat quarters into 6″ squares.  You can get 9 from a fat quarter.  I sewed them ..read more

Weaving Contemporary Magic into Traditional Quilts

My great Grandma was a master quilter.  I’m blessed to have a few of her quilts, as well as quilts from my husband’s grandmother.  These quilts give me inspiration as I draw on this rich heritage of traditional quilts and add my own personal flare. One of my favorite ways to draw on the past is to play with traditional quilt blocks.  I enjoy exploring the many ways they can be combined, twisted and turned, or experimenting with color to give them a new look.  I’ve enjoyed doing this with Majestic Mountains, Dresdens, and Log Cabins. These traditional blocks are just a few ..read more

Have you tried quilt as you go?  I’ve not done a lot of this method.  Though it does intrigue me.  I found it a fun way to make a strip quilt on my long arm.  I may explore more of that at another time.  Working with Accuquilt I’ve been introduced to June Taylor products.   They have quilt as you go products.  I recently tried there set of three quilt as you go pillows. Technically you can just use one fabric in each of the quilt as you go areas.  But where’s the fun in that?  You know me if I can make it scrappy I will. So for the first pillow ..read more

The string quilt challenge is over.  There were so many amazing quilts made.  I love seeing the creativity of the quilters as they played with their scrappy strings. Marie made string blocks in a rainbow of colors.  Her quilt is happy and bright.  I love how the string blocks are grouped and change to pull your eye through the quilt. Charlotte put her string blocks on point in a square in a square setting.  In addition she framed alternating blocks with piano key sashing.  I also love that she added a border of fireflies.  Her colors are cozy and inviting. I like to sort my scraps by color and size.  You can find my method here.  I find this helps me find and use my scraps.  I’ve done a post on using my scrappy chunks.  As well as a post on fabric strips.  Today my focus will be on my smallest scraps, namely crumbs.  These precious pieces cost just as much as your yardage. So don’t throw them away.  Even if you don’t use them.  You probably have a quilting friend that would love them. My favorite way to use these tiny pieces is to make Crumb Fabric.  I find it relaxing and a great way to create unique ..read more
