SONG OF THE DAY Spitting Image – Devils Bloom

Though Spitting Image may have been around for over ten years, they are a new discovery for the LP Blog. Their chaotic buzz and sultry riffs are causing quite a stir today though and I like the energy in their sound. It’s pretty raw and untamed. Originally a band who were initially only well-known to those who resided in their vicinity (that being Reno, Nevada), Spitting Image were recently discovered by fellow Reno-residents Slovenly Recordings. Known for promoting and signing the “grimiest punk sounds from every corner of the globe”, the label issued the band’s debut album, Full Sun, earlie ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Fire Engines – Candyskin

Hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland in the late 1970’s, The Fire Engines were a post-punk outfit that left their indelible mark on post-punk after a short-lived musical career. If you read about their history, it almost feels like their musical career was doomed even before it began. They did absolutely everything in the most chaotic and unconventional manner possible, and broke up 18 months after forming! They started their first single with a mistake, never released a proper LP and basically flew in the face of every convention of rock-n-roll and yet they managed to leave a lasting impact on t ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Squid – The Blades

This June, Brighton’s Post-punkers, Squid, are to release latest album and second full-length offering, O Monolith. With not long to wait for this new record, the band have shared new single, The Blades. Offering just over six and a half minutes of somewhat more restrained vocal work, this track takes the band down what is not only a more experimental avenue, but a more intimate venture. According to a press release, this track is singer/drummer Ollie Judge’s favourite Squid song to date.“It’s a lot more vulnerable than stuff we’ve previously done, which can be quite a daunting thin ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Stuck – The Punisher

Listening to this band for the first time the other day, I’d anticipated that they were going to be a British outfit, but Suck are actually Chicago-based. Formed in 2018 with a tight post-punk ethic driving them forward, band members rose out of the ashes of Yeesh and Clearance. Next month sees the release of their second album, Freak Frequency which was inspired by the chaos and doom of social economics. Think Devo-meets-Yard Act/Squid and you may get an idea of their sound. Punchy and frenzied, their music is jittery and intense. Explaining the thought process behind their latest, forthcomi ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Squid – Undergrowth

Someone had written in a comment that this song gets better with every listen and I can get with that! I’m on my third listen and can safely concur that this is growing on me with each play – though it’s fair to say that I did already like that dark riff of much catchiness, it’s dirty little hook does entice you in! This June, Brighton’s Post-punkers, Squid, are to release new album and second full-length offering, O Monolith. Ahead of its release comes Undergrowth (the second single) and I don’t know if you’ve picked up on the gist of the song yet, but just to fill you in, its about reincarn ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Protomartyr – Make Way

The shift between the calm and the intensity in this song could be said to echo life and its never ending transitions through light and dark. It is fair to assume, or at least (what I’ve) ascertained from now knowing some of the background behind this song, that this is a reflection of life’s rollercoaster. ‘This’ being today’s song and, indeed, all of the songs from Protomartyr’s upcoming album, Formal Growth In The Desert.  On Formal Growth In The Desert, the desert is not so much intended in the literal sense, but representative of the inner workings of the mind – Joe Casey’s min ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY The Gun Club – Yellow Eyes

“Swamp music for thinking people…….” The Gun Club may have become a well-known and established band with a few band member changes over the years, but they never quite lost that little ‘rough-round-the-edges” sound. Mother Juno was an album the band put out in 1987 and it was this record that featured today’s intoxicating offering, Yellow Eyes. Originally entitled Funky Junky, the track was one of nine songs that made up this alternative, punk-blues venture! Produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins, the Rolling Stone Album Guide described Mother Juno as “swamp music for thinking people ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY The Birthday Party – Deep In The Woods

Loving Halloween as I do, I couldn’t let this day pass without a spooky offering…and, courtesy of the fantastic Bad Seeds, I’ve got something rather deliciously doomful to the mark occasion! Not for the faint hearted, Deep In The Woods appeared on the band’s 1983 EP, The Bad Seed and boasts some wonderfully dark lyrics.  Featuring four tracks co-written by Nick Cave and Mick Harvey, it was said that this record “forecasted the imminent future of Cave as a solo artist and Harvey as his right-hand man in more than just title.” Australian writer, Clinton Walker, described the recording as ..read more

A couple of years ago I stumbled across this rather raucous bunch from Liverpool and was listening to their Excile Parlour EP earlier today, which was released in July last year.  Aside from a few singles and last year’s EP, this post-punk three piece haven’t released anything since last October, but I guess the last two years haven’t been easy for anyone on this planet!! Discordant, skittish, highly charged and rather tasty is probably the best way to describe this bunch and today’s song demonstrates all these fine attributes perfectly! Sleepless was recorded on August 2018 in a li ..read more

SONG OF THE DAY Disturbed Furniture – Information

Consisting of Alexa Hunter (vocals), Jorge Arevalo Mateus (lead guitar), Stephanie Hameon (rhythm guitar), Tony Zebe (bass) and Micki Crash (drums), Disturbed Furniture emerged in the late 1970’s on a wave of promise, but after only three short years, they regretfully dissolved.  In a short space of time they became an integral part of New York’s vibrant arts and music scene, opening for many distinguished local and British bands including the GoGo’s, the Psychedelic Furs, the Stranglers, Sector 27, The Waitresses and Lydia Lunch. They toured around the east coast of the US, were even as ..read more
