2023 Samplers – A Three pack

As we enter the last fortnight of the year, the usual round of compilations & samplers are making an appearance. Here are three that have caught my eye. Er, I mean ear! A Chaotic Pop Records Compilation – I Know It’s Only A CDR Release, But I Love It! I don’t really need to add anything else to what I have written previously these past few months about Indonesian label Chaotic Records. I think this compilation should be compulsory for any indiepop and twee-pop fan. Available on CDR but, thanks to the postage costs, it’s also available digitally from the label. Leading from last week’s sampler which seemed to generate some interest here is another mix containing 22 tracks from the last few months. I’m loving the music from the likes of Glaring, Nürnberg, Hungry Boys, Duct Tape, Twin Tribes, French Police etc. No fillers here, though as there are plenty of excellent singles & tracks from a number of bands that are (well, were) new to me over the course of eighty minutes. As ever, enjoy! Tracklisting: October Front – The Wine Flows (Single Mix) Dancing Plague – Lose Glaring – Eight22 Чайки Улетают С Моря – У Меня Есть Выход Edges – Leather And An ..read more

Post Punk Sampler November 2023

I was going through the playlists I have previously posted on Mixcloud the other week and realised that I have not posted a post-punk mix for what seems like ages now, despite me devouring the stuff on a regular basis. This is a taster mix for a far longer cousin that should hopefully be posted before the month is out. So whilst I indulge myself on a well deserved long weekend break in Sofia, I hope you enjoy this mix of coldwave, darkwave, gothic rock and all things post-punk spread over the 12 tracks here. Track Listing: Varsovie – Synesthésie Überspannung – Weit Unten Sang Froid – Heavy S ..read more

Deceits – Every Promise

I have been enjoying the retro post-punk sounds of Deceits since I first heard them via their En Soledad single over a year ago now. Heavily influenced by the early works of The Cure alongside Joy Division, The Chameleons and peers such as Human Tetris, the new single Every Promise is the second to be lifted from their forthcoming debut album. The band write that the song “tells a story about love and loss, with the sharp realization that you only have yourself to blame.” Despite the gloomy words, it has an upbeat sound. Or maybe that’s just me, as it is a sound I enjoy. That debut album shou ..read more

The Coventry – Atropine

The Coventry is one of those bands I have been listening too on and off for a few years now, but a search of this site shows that I have never mentioned them. Anyway if you are a fan of retro sounding post-punk then this Italian based band will be right up your street. Or should that be strada? Atropine is an expansive synth driven sounding post-punk song that encompasses dark wave and gothic rock, taking in the darker side of the early 1980s. Both vocals and chorus easily draw the listener in. It’s certainly the most accessible single of theirs that I have heard. Enjoyable stuff through the ..read more

Ash Code – Tear You Down

Fresh from their techno collaboration with Ellen Allien Italian darkwave act Ash Code return with a new single titled Tear You Down. It’s a hypnotic synth lead track that takes the listener to the darker and gloomy recesses of the genre, whilst the deadpan gothic vocals remind me somewhat of Chris Reed from Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. The thriving bass and synth combination stays with the listener long after the track has ended. Tear You Down is out now digitally. The band will also be starting a tour of the States from 15 September 2023. Go and see them if they are playing your town! Facebook ..read more

SYNTHESE – Show

SYNTHESE are a Russian post-punk act who sing not only in their native language but in German and English too. When I first heard their blend of coldwave, minimal and synthpop hooks I was immediately impressed and purchased their own discography. It was my own, and very small, Victor Kiam moment. After a few singles and one EP Show is the band’s debut album. The opening track German Disco is emotionally cold and very early Mute Records like. Высоковольтные провода continues with an empty, harsh metallic sound but still manages to derive some emotion. Elements of italio-disco appear on ..read more

Radiosonic, aka Polish born and now London based Robert Gula, released his Love Embargo EP back in August 2021. Alongside two original tracks was his cover of Joy Division’s Atmosphere. I missed it at the time, so why mention it now? Well a video for the song, which has been christened as Ian Curtis’ Epilepsy Dance All Moves Gathered And Reimagined, has just been released. Gula writes: “The concept for this came to me right after I finished recording my rendition of Atmosphere, but as far as I can recall, I’ve always been drawn to Ian’s moves. They appear out of this world to me, which is goo ..read more
