Parents will likely be hyper-aware this year as their high school students are engaging in “youth voter registration.” This is legal and was passed through the Washington legislature in 2018 in HB 1513 in an effort to address low youth voter turnout and encourage participation of youth in the election process. “HB 1513 established the opportunity for students to register to vote when they obtain their driver’s license from the Department of Licensing (DOL). In addition, it established the Future Voter Program (#FutureVoter), to be administered by the Secretary of State. This program allows 16 ..read more

New law protects abortion providers at the expense of patients

Washington democrats have not just legalized abortion, they’ve made it protected healthcare for minor children (of no minimum age), they’ve removed all cost sharing (so either Medicaid pays or your insurance company foots the entirety of the bill), they’re forcing health care facilities to provide abortion or be shut down and they’re even trying to make it difficult for pro life medical centers to offer ultra sound services to expectant mothers. Just when you think they’ve taken the abortion cause about as far as they can, radical left democrats say, “hold my beer.” House Bill 2115 rec ..read more

A Teacher’s Perspective: HB 2331 likely to force good teachers out of schools

*Guest post by CLW Member and Washington Public School Teacher I want to start out this column by first saying that I am supportive of good teachers. I acknowledge all the awesome teachers in WA and around the country who are doing their best to try and give students in their classes a great education when the higher ups who have not been in the classroom in years are dictating how and what these good teachers are supposed to teach to their students. Most of these teachers, myself included, have been teaching 10, 15, 20+ years and have witnessed the decline of our educational system, especial ..read more

Education “Pathways”: Where, exactly, do they lead?

By Joy Gjersvold, CLW Programs Director Do you know that the State Board of Education in Washington state thinks that performance-based pathways or competency-based education, also known as Mastery Based Learning (MBE), is a good option for YOUR child? No matter what they call it, do you know that performance-/competency-based learning has NOTHING to do with academic excellence? Do you know that MBE was one of the last steps in states like Oregon before they just did away with graduation standards altogether? ‼️PRO TIP:  When a piece of legislation or a policy in education includes the ..read more

Week 4 is sure to be another game of “legislative whack-a-mole.” Wednesday is session cutoff, so the committees will be working fast and furiously to move their favored bills out of the house of origin. There will be fewer public hearings as the committees focus on executive sessions, which is where they discuss bill that have had hearings and vote them out of committee. Please be sure to bookmark our Legislative Action Center and check back often for new calls to action. The calls to action will be shifting as many bills enter a new stage in the legislative process. Another bad bill getting a second chance in Olympia *By Julie Barrett, Founder, Conservative Ladies of Washington Last session Conservative Ladies testified in opposition to SB 5209 on January 31st in the Senate State Government & Elections Committee. We believe this bill interferes with our First Amendment Rights. This bill would establish “universal civic duty voting,” which would require citizens to vote, by law. Of course, we think all citizens who are legally eligible to vote should exercise this duty and privilege. However, we do not believe it should be mandated and this law would ..read more

The first week of Washington’s short 2024 legislative session is almost complete and it’s been a doozy! We’ve seen a lot of bad policy proposed and more to come in week 2. But we are so encouraged by the thousands of you who have taken action on so many bills just in week 1. Let’s double those efforts in week 2 – commit to being so loud they can’t ignore you! It may take time, but we’ve got to start somewhere! Below are just 10 of the bills with public hearings next week that we feel are the most consequential and need citizen attention and input.  The following list are the ones within ..read more
