The Love Album
Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles
by Will Hines

The panel discusses the 2006 album Love. A soundtrack to a Cirque du Soleil show, it is also a terrific standalone listening experience. Giles Martin, a then new produce on the Beatles team, carried on his father's legacy and oversaw the project brilliantly. The new (at the time) mixes brought new life to beloved songs. The mashups, which could have been gimmicky and cheap, were thoughtful and artfully chosen -- they still sound great over 15 years later. Even the sequencing -- starting off with the acapella version of "Because" and ending with the triumphant "All You Need Is Love" -- is deft ..read more

Become a subscriber to get access to full back catalog! See https://www.screwitpodcasts.com/ ------------------------ First we cover some news: recovered Hofner, new Sam Mendes Beatles movies, Rolling Stone "solo Beatles" list, Sean Lennon at the Oscars, and Will's second trip to Liverpool. THEN we get into covering the new Blue Album remixes. We like these remixes way more than the ones for early Red Album tracks. In particular we think Fool on the Hill has been given new life in this remix! Hey Bulldog was great in mono, but this new stereo mix is fun too. We hear fun new percussion sounds ..read more

Red Album - 2023 Remix - Full Epsiode
Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles
by Will Hines

The Red Album was (the first half of) the first official Beatles Greatest Hits collection when it was issued in 1973. Until the CDs were released in the late 80s, it was the definitive Beatles collection --- it seemed everyone had a copy. Although it is "just" a compilation, the "Red Album" has emotional importance to many Beatles fans for whom it served as a gateway to the band. So we love the Red Album! But.... we don't really love the remixes! And we have loved most of the remixes that Giles Martin has overseen! But there's something off here, especially with the very early Beatles singles ..read more

18 - Sgt. Pepper's Remix
Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles

EMERGENCY EPISODE (er, kind of): We review the new remix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! We get deep into audiophile things, talking about where the instruments are panned in terms of "left" vs "right" and the what the previous versions of this album were like (mono vs stereo), and what the difference is between "remastered" and "remixed." We check out the extra tracks a bit, including the first take of "Lucy in the Sky." It is nerdy and specific and fawning and fun. Stick around after the theme to hear Brett Morris noodling on his guitar and talking a bit about John's songwriting. P ..read more

Abbey Road. How did we ever think there was an album better than this? Our panelists enter into a state of transcendental bliss as they listen to the entirety of this, the last album the Beatles recorded. We realize that we have loved this album our whole lives. Every track we find ourselves saying "oh, no, THIS one is our favorite." It doesn't seem to get old. The Beatles (+ producer George Martin, engineer Geoff Emerick) use everything they've learned along the way -- and they've learned a lot. In just 7 years, the band has evolved from a merely brilliant blues-rock cover ..read more

13 - Let It Be
Screw It, We're Just Gonna Talk About the Beatles

Our panel dissects the strange album that is Let it Be. Part live album, part throwback, part new songs, part movie soundtrack - what IS it? Something like 10 producers worked on it (2 mostly) and it didn't even come out until after the Beatles broke up. (We're covering it now because we're doing the album in the order they were recorded, not released). We still like it a lot. Our panel also gets into what the sexiest Beatle song is, that Paul McCartney is Jackie's real dad, that Heather has weird taste in what counts as a sexy song, and that the song Let It Be is one of the most perfect ..read more

Holy crap. Just three albums in and we are already at a masterpiece: A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. Spoiler alert: We love it. This is the first "all killer, no filler" album. It's so happy! But wait, it's sad! And holy crap: they had "Can't Buy Me Love" and also "If I Fell" on this album? And the title track? AND EVERY SONG? Panelists: Will Hines, Joel Spence, Curtis Gwinn, Ariana Lenarsky.   --------------------------- New episodes and a selection of back episode are in our free feed.
