It was with some trepidation that I got on the train to the NEC. I’d never been there before and had no real idea of what to expect at the Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Show and added to that was the fact that I would also be speaking at the event! I needn’t have worried though because from the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and at ease. It was fantastic to finally meet in person the wonderful people who work so hard to raise awareness through the Dyscalculia Network: Cat, Rob, Peter and Emily. It was also great to meet the other tutors and assessors that I had also only ever seen online, as wel ..read more

It’s a week since the UK had its first Dyscalculia Show. The brainchild of Arran Smith, the Dyslexia Show is the UK’s leading exhibition dedicated to dyslexia and neurodiversity with tons of organisations descending on Birmingham’s NEC to dispense help, advice and new assistive technologies all designed to empower dyslexics.
This year, the Dyslexia Show really demonstrated their commitment to neurodiversity by expanding their remit to create the Dyscalculia Show. Seeing the words ‘Dyscalculia Show’ in bold purple next to the ‘Dyslexia Show’ was an emotional moment for me. Altho ..read more

Lisa – My Journey to Passing GCSE Maths!
Lisa, is 42 and an undiagnosed Dyscalculic adult who has recently passed her GCSE maths! She shares her story with us here.
The School Years
I am 42 and have struggled with maths for as long as I remember. I recall being taking out for maths when I was little and even crying about it then and it’s like it’s stayed with me. I have always found that I’ve needed to be shown things a few times and I taught myself in school that it was best to keep quiet as I just at times couldn’t grasp things.
The thing that has stayed the most with me in my yo ..read more

Candice discovered she had dyscalculia later in her life.
A successful entrepreneur and business founder of organic herbal tea company Mother Cuppa, yes – it’s an intentional play on words, Candice spoke to Cat about her experiences of dyscalculia and how it shaped her life.
Early Education
In fact, at one point her life could have been very different. As a child, Candice wanted to study ballet and passed a competitive entrance exam to get into ballet school aged 11. But her parents believed this wasn’t the right path for her – the scholarship would require a lot of work and they were co ..read more

Number Line 4 in a Row By Karen Go Soco
This game is quick to set up and gives practise of placing numbers appropriately on a numberline, an activity which some learners can find difficult. It is great to play before introducing the concept of rounding numbers. It can be easily adapted to working with different ranges of numbers.
You will need:
• An empty number line with 10 intervals
• 10-sided dice (or place value dice)
• Coloured pens/pencils.
How to play:
• Record the end numbers on the numberline, 1 to 1000 for 3-digit numbers, and let the learner fill in multiples of 100 for each marked ..read more
