I had a jansport pack that I dearly loved, it was coming apart at the seams after several years of daily use. I took it on one last adventure to Puerto Rico and retired it. I then got a replacement pack that just wasn't the same. I am determined to grow to love my new pack so I fully intend to begin using it this weekend on a hiking trip. I went snowmobiling yesterday and noticed everyone wore radios. When I asked my guide if that was just to communicate with friends, they said it was also for emergencies. It surprised me because of all the mountains and valleys in that area, so line-of-sight must be horrible, but they must know what they are doing. I have noticed that several packs offer the option to roll the top of the backpack and either clip the buckles up top like a dry bag, or down on the sides of the pack for vertical compression. I have also seen some experienced backpackers clip the top together before rolling and then secure the top strap over everything.
