*A Mother’s Wish blog contains a treasure trove of insights. We have deliberately not created a paywall for our mission to share accurate insights about the inner lives of autistic individuals to everyone. But we would be most grateful for an SGD10 payment of love and support if you feel you have benefited and are in a position to help us continue our mission. A new digital photograph of Sebastien's artwork is available each time we upload a new post. Autistic individuals, particularly those who engage in atypical communication, are great barometers of humanity. They possess a critical ..read more

"An Ordinary Life" for My Autistic Son
A Mother's Wish Blog

by Choo Kah Ying When I sent these photos to a parent of an autistic adult son, he wrote back with a concise comment, “Seems like an ordinary life.”  This "short and sweet" comment struck me with its simplicity on the surface. For there was nothing "ordinary" about Sebastien's life in Bali, as captured in these images, which took place over two weeks recently. In fact, Sebastien being engaged in purposeful activities that supported his daily existence — growing the food that he eats and making the furniture that he uses, or doing leisure activities with relaxation, were far from ord ..read more

But this video is significant not only because of this beautiful spot but also in the way that Sebastien was swinging so tranquilly and so happily, thus making it possible for Hari, my dedicated carer, to capture these moments. None of this took place overnight. Rather, it was a culmination of a long and heart-wrenching journey of sev ..read more

My Autistic Son's Painting "Children"
A Mother's Wish Blog

Just spent the morning doing one of my oft-neglected responsibilities as Sebastien's long-distance mum: caring for the paintings he has made. This time, I am going one step further: I am planning to sort through the paintings, pick out the better ones, and put the rest away in storage. One of these overdue tasks that could never get on a to-do list in one's life. This is no mean feat, as Sebastien painted every day from the age of 13 until age 20. While he was primarily engaged in the process, as painting was his sanctuary, helping him to regulate his emotions and cope with living in our worl ..read more

A Place Where Sebastien, My Autistic Son, Could Belong

by Choo Kah Ying Sebastien at Canggu, Bali, June 2023 There Sebastien was, standing tall and strong in the water, as he beheld the billowing waves tumbling towards him. His shoulders slumped, his arms hanging down from his sides, there was not a tinge of uncertainty or hesitation. Yes, it has been almost seven years since Sebastien has lived in Bali, and he's clocked some time in the ocean. Still, I marveled at how at ease he was in the ocean. At that very moment, time seemed to collapse — the past overlapping with the present. In a scene not too different from this one, a younger Sebastien w ..read more

A Mother’s Wish for My Autistic Son Coming True — Bali 2.0
A Mother's Wish Blog

by Choo Kah Ying What will happen to my autistic son when I am gone? Back in 2014, I created A Mother's Wish in an endeavor to create a community that could be there for my son, when I would no longer be around. I knew it would take a “village” to raise an autistic individual — a very special one — one that would need to have the heart, stamina, and spirit to go the distance. For this is what it will take to love an autistic individual, particularly a non-verbal one, as he grows into adulthood and beyond. It didn’t happen for us in Singapore. But little did I know that the seeds of A Mother’s ..read more
