A torn and tagged album of scuffed pop rises out of the Midwest this week from Chicago songwriter Aaron Osbourne under his DAR moniker. The band’s second album embraces the mantle of ‘90s rock with an eager hand, digging into the fuzz, froth, and tension like a lost gem in the college radio CD submission pile. Osbourne roots through GBV and Sebadoh’s toolbox, all the while eyeing Afghan Whigs and long forgotten pop purveyors like Self. With some enlisted help from Jenny Rose & Ryan Davis (Equipment Pointed Ankh, Roadhouse Band), he turns out 200 lb riffs, thundering drums, and the slick sq ..read more

Rosali

It’s great to see bands and artists you love make good and few are more deserving of the praise and spotlight than Rosali. Middleman’s last album found her connecting with fellow RSTB fave David Nance and his band Mowed Sound. The band returns for her Merge debut, Bite Down, an album that tempers just a bit of the burn that washed down with No Medium, but packs just as much emotional heft. Nance and co. back Rosali with the tightness of Crazy Horse and the caress of Yo La Tengo. The last record, with Mowed Sound behind her, turned a corner for Rosali. Her sound progressed from solo singer-song ..read more

Blue Ranger – “Wicked Curtain”

Albany’s Blue Ranger clamber into the arms of country for their latest single. With a touch of twang, the band pairs a slow saunter with a bit of yearning that can’t help but bring a melancholy grin to the listener’s face. The song is unhurried, reclining in its own graces, pushed by the snap of Matt Griffin’s drums and the lacquered lushness of Joshua F. Marré’s guitar. The song evokes and a looseness and ease that’s emblematic of their Upstate environs. It’s full of sun off the river, and breezes over the distant green peaks. Summer’s on it’s way, but with “Wicked Curtain,” it feels like it ..read more

Yea-Ming and the Rumours – “I Can’t Have It All”

A new single and album announcement today from Bay Area strummers Yea-Ming and The Rumours. With a fuller sound that Chen has had in the past on her releases, the upcoming album promises to be her ‘pop’ album proper. Recorded with Meric Long (The Dodos) at Tiny Telephone Studios, the album finds the band swelling with members of other Oakland favorites Hits and Latitude. The first single is the sweet, swooning lament of “I Can’t Have It All.” Yea-Ming has alluded to a love of Camera Obscura, and it’s a good touchstone for the kind of confessional, intimate tone that’s attached to the track. Velociraptor – “Computer Future Pt 1”

A familiar name rises out of the Aussie underground today with news of a new album from Velociraptor. Been a few years since I’ve heard from the band, but the expansive collective return, glossed and gorging on a New Wave cocktail of Devo, Tubeway Army, and Ultravox. The first single out of the gate is “Computer Future Part 1,” a nervy, searing slice of synth punk if there ever was one. The drums crash with motorik precision, guitars chew on the steel and circuits of a technological nightmare, and George Browning lays down the dystopian howl with the best of ‘em. The single is out now, from Co ..read more

Bill MacKay – “Glow Drift”

A second peek into Bill MacKay’s upcoming album lands this week, eschewing vocals for an instrumental tussle that finds Bill and co. on an even keel. The track has a soft percolation to it, a motion that’s set aloft by organ that dips and dives around Bill’s guitar. The song is lost in a morning fog, a kind of daybreak disposition that feels like the start of something new. The song sits among a new crop of gems on Bill’s upcoming Locust Land, out May 24th from Drag City. Locust Land by Bill MacKay Support the artist. Buy it HERE ..read more

Jim Nothing – “Easter at the RSC”

A softer side of the indie pop onslaught today as site favorite Jim Nothing stretches out with a sleepy but satisfying jangler. The second single since December finds the band exploring a more nuanced side of their sound, moving away from some of the taut ‘90s indie that permeated their last LP. The song lopes along, reclines in the afternoon rays, and washes away on a sea of foam and amp froth. Still no album in sight, but along with that last single, it feels like something’s building. Here’s hoping they get tied together with an official release date. For now, why not just put this one on r ..read more

Rural France – “Tag Along”

Gonna be an indie pop kinda day around here. A second single surges out of the new record from Rural France. The band’s pop bluster shows no signs of waning on album opener “Tag Along,” a cut that captures a bit of GBV pop overload, tempered with a blush of bleary production that finds ‘em squinting in the sun, waiting for the swell of guitars to wash them out of the studio and out onto the streets. The new album, Exactamondo!, gears up for a release on April 26th from Meritorio Records. Exactamondo! by Rural France Support the artist. Buy it HERE ..read more

The Reds, Pinks and Purples – “What’s Going on with Ordinary People ”

Another delightful sigh from the Reds, Pinks, and Purples camp today. As Glenn works his way towards a seventh album, he’s perfected a balance of bittersweet and buoyant. The song tumbles somewhere between Felt and The La’s, a lament on the kind of melancholy that sits on your chest like a lead weight. There’s always been a bit of a cloudy disposition to the RPPs, but on his latest, it seems that the sun shines less than ever. A perfect companion to the relentless crush and commodification of modern life. It’s overwhelming out there, hell is other people, and the RPPs are just trying to get th ..read more
